Crank Holding Tool - 240 vs 940 900

Hi all,
I am going to change the timing belt on my son's '93 940 wagon. I have CTA crank holding tool 2242 for my '86 240 sedan but noticed that on the box, it says that the tool is for a 1985-93 240. Are there changes on the 940 red block that that prevents this tool from being used? I just wanted to check before I take everything apart.
Thanks,
Joel

If you have the steel version of the holder you should be fine
Mine is what IPD sold and works on my '94 940

Crank Holding Tool - 240 vs 940 900

Dear rjk,

Hope you're well. I agree. IPD or Volvo crank-hold tools fit Volvo harmonic balancers (crankshaft pulleys).

Some after-market pulley-makers decided - for no obvious reason - to narrow the slots that receive the crank-hold tool. This slot-narrowing complicates that which should be simple. Wider slots mean less metal is needed, so the narrow-slot pulleys notionally cost more to make.

The slots in a Volvo brand crank pulley are about 7mm wide. Those in non-conforming (aftermarket) crank pulleys are about 6mm wide. "Wide" refers to the crank pulley slots' narrow axis. The long axis allows both tools to fit.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Thanks so much,
I have one if the after market varieties so I'll note that. I can't even remember when I got this one lol.
Thank you!

Crank Holding Tool - 240 vs 940 900

Dear Griff951,

Hope you're well. The crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer) is Volvo part #9135194. This pulley was used on B230 engines installed in 240, 740, 760, 780 and 940 engines, from 1985 through 1995.

Timing belts used on 1993 and later B230 engines have a different (rounded) tooth profile: belt used on 1992 and earlier timing belts have a square tooth profile.
The different tooth profile should not matter at all.

Thus, the tool should work on any 940 with a B230 or B230FT engine.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

The CTA Tools 2242 - Crankshaft Holding Tool - Volvo

http://www.ctatools.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=336

Same as what iPd sells as the MTC version

2242 - Crankshaft Holding Tool - Volvo

https://www.ipdusa.com/products/7988/115647-crankshaft-pulley-holder-tool-b230

Same as FCP Euro, yet FCP states it as a CTA Tool.

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-counterhold-tool-240-740-760-780-940-tools-9995284

I have the 9995284 from OTC or SPX(?) or OPX(?) tools. Heavy dense cast aluminum. Fitted the factory installed harmonic balancer crank pulley fine on the 1991 240. The OEM harmonic balancer crank pulley.

(The http://www.volvotools.com calls it the COUNTERHOLD VIBRATION DAMPENER B200.) Volvo Tools is now the only OEM outlet. Another copyright IP grab by Geely Volvo?

So, this OTC tools 9995824 did not fit the replacement OEM pulley. The counterhold 'teeth' would not fit into the new pulley 'slots'.

The CTA Tool 'teeth' would appear to fit factory installed gotta replace it now harmonic oscillator vibration dampener (damper?) pulley both old and new.

Images of CTA Tool.

Like the tool I have here in front of me, yet polished alum.

Here is what I have:

Image is on this thread in an Italy Volvo forum. (I can barely read Italian, much less Latin and Spanish anymore. D'oh.)

http://www.volvoclub.it/forum/index.php?topic=52774.0

So, what you have should work.

I had to push into the counterhold I have so there would be enough grab to counterhold during removal and torque of the crank pulley bolt.

Wish I had you CTA Tools 2242!

Thanks,

Bub.
