Dear Art,
I feel compelled to respond to a statement you made in a recent reply regarding your reduced participation here on the brickboard. I wish others to appreciate your situation as much as I do -I've been there myself.
First off, we are all so glad to know that you are alive and well and any fears we may have had were unfounded. No amount of thanks and accolades could ever convey how much all your friends on the brickboard appreciate you and everything you have done for us and the Volvo community at large. The totality of your efforts is beyond comprehension, likely even to you. You are also one of the earliest and longest serving contributors, going back some 20 years now (when brickboard 2.0 came along, you became user #27, I beat you by a day or two as user #20). There are many other current and past contributors who also deserve our undying gratitude, not to mention Jarrod, but you are an undeniable superstar.
I will quote part of your recent reply as this has special significance to me and is very apropos the current situation here.
"Really I'm here, but "anyone else" is doing fine as most of us are just looking for expedient solutions and bypasses to irritations, not the sort of root cause analysis to waste Jarrod's bandwidth. I'll post maybe if a question hasn't been covered a dozen times before with my photos and links."
That is precisely how I felt a few years ago when I made the decision to back away from my daily activities here on the brickboard. Thoughts of all my efforts disappearing into the ozone if the brickboard should close would have caused me even more dismay. As I recently mentioned to Jay, I know how much time I used to put in, especially when I was a moderator in the background and writing articles for the FAQ, so I have a pretty good idea how much more time you and others often invest and it boggles my mind. It is indeed a labour of love here, an investment we hope is reciprocated by the knowledge and appreciation of others. Our rewards as contributors are the satisfaction of helping others to the best of our abilities (as limited as mine sometimes may be), advancing our own skills and knowledge in the process, inspiring others to do likewise, and being able to participate and make acquaintances in a community of like minded people. If Don Foster is still following us (another great name from the past), I'll bet he got to a similar stage when he decided to step back.
The brickboard platform and forums, and especially the opinions forum, are a true form of early social media, predated by the likes of Usenet (remember alt.autos.volvo?), in parallel with the likes of Turbobricks and volvoforums.org.uk. I feel so fortunate to have been able to experience and learn so much about how to effectively participate in social media that was built alongside a combined Q&A and reference. In some ways, Jarrod was a bit of a visionary. Just as an example, you and I were among the early few here to stick our necks out and use our full real names -it helps keep me honest and behaved, just so long as strangers don't come to my door in the middle of the night seeking help or revenge. Today, I keep a relatively low profile on Facebook because of the lessons learned here, not the least of which is budgeting my time and making humour and sarcasm blatantly obvious lest one get misinterpreted and burned. Facebook would need to be much more customizable, with nested user groups and indexed, searchable document and video libraries, to be any kind of decent replacement and improvement over the brickboard platform. But I digress from your situation here at the moment.
My own recent increase in activity here is in part also due to concerns of brickboard's future based on Jarrod’s recent announcements (for those who haven't seen them, go looking now in the RWD forum All/All). At the risk of increasing Jarrod’s bandwidth costs due to my perennial verbosity and cutting too deeply into my available time, if I can stimulate more interest through both technical and social conversations, rather than giving out spark plug gaps for the millionth time, then perhaps that will encourage increased efforts by others, including Jarrod.
Art, you have more than earned a well deserved rest. I honestly don’t know how you've been able to keep it up this long at the level you do. I really have visions of a full blown Volvo war room and R&D facility in your house, laugh. The user base here does perhaps need to be tested to see if the current crop of contributors can continue to keep things running and if new contributors are willing to step forward. It's not just that the board has become perhaps a bit complacent, even a bit dependent on your expertise, I’m wondering if it may be a little intimidating for beginners to try stepping in with their size 6 shoes, hamstruck with awe and a bit of fear when they see size 14 boots in the same room. Jarrod also needs to be tested to see if he is willing and able to refurbish the ship and put it back on course. In the meantime, keep your flametrap clean and the wheels rolling. We’ll be jealously watching for you on TB.
Cheers -Dave

Dave,
Kind words and thoughts. Thank you.
You wondered why I stepped back.... more of a reality of life. When I posted so often, I was heading toward retirement age in a retirement job that was booooring. And so I retired. During that slooow job and my early retirement, I had time to engage in all the BB activities and write.
But I decided to start over, so I went back to school (third grad degree) strictly for fun... and the university hired me part-time and then full-time. Kinda like "You Only Live Twice." Having a wonderful time teaching and working with engineering students on projects.
Still have a yard full of Volvos -- my newest is a '97 850 GLT. Since I'm so busy with students and school activities, Volvos are a bit less of a hobby and more of a functional utility... at this point. That might change.
Best wishes to you, Art, and all the terrific folks on BB. And thanks to Chris V. for alerting me to your letter.
Don

Don, so great to know you're doing well! You never struck me as the kind of guy who could easily retire from Volvos and the Brickboard community. Thanks for letting us know how you've been doing and best of luck to you in all your life's endeavours. For me, enjoyment is all about being able to open new chapters in life and pursue them to my hearts desire. Seems we share that attitude. The fact I've never been able close the Volvo chapter in my life is rather surprising -still driving Swedish iron after 50 years now. This has to be some kind of medically certifiable condition we share. Having a few spare moments of late to get back to the Brickboard and attempt to help others has been rewarding, almost invigorating. As I've always said, I can both appreciate and be amazed by the effort the likes of you have been able to keep up with your Brickboard participation, even more so how Art could do everything he has consistently done for so many years now. A lot of people owe the life of their bricks to this forum. I raise a glass to you on behalf of us all!

Yes people get burned at public forums. Just doing your part in replying sensibly is good enough. And if root cause analysis (RCA) need to be done then do it but still sticking to providing sensible answer. Myself on the other hand find RCAs too time consuming plus if ever any changes need to be done to the root design of any failing part there would be another weakness issue cropping up to mess-up with you later. All I could gather in the end is that these are akin to engineers' "game" though I don't really blame them for these. And the word "game" unlike real game where there are evident winners and losers. Designing is just an intelectual excercise. They had to design a working item with a finite lifetime with available resources. And engineers get paid for it. Do we get paid doing any RCA? I think the answer is evident. Curiosity gets us working on RCA. Did we ever realise that for the engineers its just a job to feed their families? Newer parts with updated design should work better and longer but still you can't ignore the system. As long as we're using Otto engines we are limited to the systemic issues inherent to its design. And we can't really complain about that, could we? When the system changes, like an electric car for example, we don't have to deal with fuel pump anymore. A simple answer? Yes its as simple as that. Life could be complicated if we made it be so.
And not forgetting the car is just an invention like every other GREAT inventions in the world. Its the satisfaction in helping others that matters. And I agree Art and other GREAT posters have been doing more than their part in helping. Offer what you could and go on living life. Forum is about 1% (if I may put a value to it) of life and still a virtual reality. You shouldn't been spending time more than you should.
Amarin.

Dave,
Thank you. This is kinda embarrassing, so I hope to return your cheers and say you hit the nail on the head, and then maybe it will scroll off into social media oblivion.

Nothing to be embarassed about at all, Art. I can't tell you how much I empathize with your situation and wish you all the best. I mostly wanted you to know that your feelings are not at all unfounded and you are not alone in your thinking. This thread will soon be so far down that it will be but a faint footnote to the daily activity here. I wish I'd been in a position to have this conversation with you over a drink and a good laugh or three, rather than an open letter. At the same time you have a faithful following that wants to know what's happening. Cheers, cheers and more cheers to one of the finest people I've never met. -Dave

Brickboard, like Turbobricks, knows no oblivion.
Why I cajole, persuade, and exhort them facebook RWD Volvo people to arrive here, have a look, perform a search in the RWD and FAQ, and also post for the current understanding of a RWD (and sometimes AWD/FWD) affliction.
Mr. Benstein: Your name rings familiar with those facebook users and their contemporaneous Volvo topic or issue. I post links to your cleanflametrap unendingly.
I also make mention of the many brickboard (and Turbobricks) forum members including the mighty and powerful Art Benstein. (Who appears not to facebook!)
Art, you are correct that posts on these facebook forums do end up as social media oblivion.
Numerous posts on this sound and that, with mobile phone video, or not able to pass emissions in CA-state and elsewhere, or "what's that smell?", and on and on disappear. To reappear from another facebook not so new Volvo owner. Try to find the earlier post, and it is not findable. Very nihilistic.
That is where I use up my nearly daily "helps you fix your 240" such with heavy exhortation they show up here and join (maybe donate).
Though for selfish reason I practice some manner of compulsive writing practice to preserve my QWERTY affinity for the next writer task on the facebook. Not as much here anymore.
Art, thank you and our colleagues here for your unending and on-point guidance. A tremendous learning experience to read your posts and better explain system theory and application and then sometimes procedural steps as I would as a working technical writer.
Hope that helps.
Thank you,
Buttermilk Boy
