Strange door chime isssue 200 1991

A new to me 1991 244 automatic (my second 240) has developed an issue where over bumps and hard turns the door chime and seatbelt light goes on. I drove it for roughly a thousand miles after buying it before this started happening. After a few obnoxious days, the kenwood deck that was existing in the car also started to cut out and display a “wiring fault” reading in sync with the door chime/seatbelt light. If I shut the deck off and turn it back on it goes away, until the next hard bump anyways.

So I was considering just pulling the chime speaker from behind the dash and assumed it was one of the door switches causing the issue. but since the stereo started acting up I wonder what’s actually going on, and wouldn’t expect pulling the chime speaker out to fix the stereo problem, and I gotta have a working stereo.

Any direction you can point me is greatly appreciated.

PS the wiring behind the stereo looks very good, it was soldered and shrink wrapped and I checked it against a diagram, and accordingly is 100% correct

I think that checking door switches is a great idea.

An old time mechanic once told me that switches are a weak point with Volvo electrics.

I would pull one switch out and drive the car a couple of days to see if the problem is gone, I would not put any back until I eliminated all of them.

Check the first switch to see if it is open or closed when it is pushed in.

Why? If the closed door position has the switch in the closed position, the switches could be in series, and any one could break the circuit, causing a relay to activate things.

Of course, tape the connectors so that they do not short out

Any connectors that you take apart should be cleaned as much as possible and then treated with dielectric grease.

Almost everything electrical that you take apart on modern cars has been treated with dielectric grease.

Maybe start by checking the door switches, beginning with the driver door. They can be problematic. Carefully remove each one straight out as the contacts can easily spark and arc on the chassis. Make sure all wires are snugly connected, the switch is relatively clean and remove any rust on the chassis. A loose or chafed wire, worn fuse or loose relay would seemingly be the most likely candidates behind your intermittent problems.

Thanks Dave, do you have any idea why the radio began to be affected by the fault?

A loose wire in the radio harness/connectors? Loose wire near a radio connection or the fuse panel?

I ordered 4 new door switches just for the hell of it they were 2 bucks each. Haven’t received them yet though. But I’ve had a bit of an interesting development the other day. I learned that if I push up on the steering wheel it will make it chime. I need to replace the cluster backlight bulbs (on their way also) so when I do that I’ll have a look back there and seee what I can find

If any door switches were the trouble, it would only be yours, as the driver.

Maybe your steering column sensitivity is a clue. Check the common grounding screw. It gets its ground from a wire to the center console ground.
