93 240 classic 5spd wagon... found on 'bring a trailer'.. oh my! 200 1993

Good morning all,
My 'bargain'.. not so.. '93 240 5spd wagon.. is indeed in good shape re: body.. not so much re: bushings, connecting rods and several electrical components.. to say nothing about the reported mileage...

So I need a bit of help with several items:
1.It has electric mirrors; and heated seats.. cruise; a/c etc; Small problem: the electric mirrors and the heated seats do not work; I understand there is a relay of some sort that controls both? is that right? If accurate, where is it? easy to obtain and replace? Fuses are in tact.

2. The windshield wipers are barely moving.. mechanical connecting arms not bent.. probably motor. Experience w IPD, or FCP euro replacement wiper motors? Access to a volvo replacement part for wiper motor?

More to come; but I need records in front of me.. to give accurate picture.
Cheers, and thank you
Victorsee

Yiours is the red one that recently sold? That is a nice looking wagon. Have you purchased a Bentley manual yet.
About your wipers I would start by checking the voltage to the motor, then disconnect the linkage if the motor runs faster while the linkage is disconnected the issue is with the linkage, if not it maybe the motor. Mine is a bit slow but it’s useable. Not sure which motor to buy, years ago I think my mechanic just rebuilt the one on my previous 240.
What’s wrong with the connecting rods? I assume you are Not referring to the part that connects the piston to the crankshaft, but rather a suspension component.
Nice wheels on your wagon by the way, I would love to find a set like that.

Thanks; unfortunately.. its 'better lookin' than the reality; start with a 9 year gap in a working odometer.. and go downhill from there. Its clearly not 'approximately 176K Mi's

yes the 'rods' are suspension not engine.. my bad.

Hi,

Odometer readings on 240's are pretty much meaningless at this point.

If buying a car unseen, it's worth running the vin on Car Check for about $15.It may give you valuable information on mileage, accidents, etc.

The early Feb wagon from NC, not the late Feb one from Montana.

Very similar, but different, my comment regarding the wheels still applies. Good luck these are great cars, but occasionally will test your patients.

I followed you on that one.....was hoping it was in great shape for the price paid. I just can't bring myself to buy a car without putting hands on it, a thorough inspection and test drive. Following along here -- hoping the "fix-its" are all relatively minor for you.

Thank you..
The car is definitely, 'not as represented'.. for one thing.. it was not "approximately 176K Mi... by 9 years worth of broken odometer...
Its more like "lipstick on a...."..
My bad; a cautionary tale;

So for 1):

The mirror and seat heaters are separate.

I know how to test an 89, 90, and 91 seat heaters. I know the 93 is different as it does not have the plastic mesh as the previous years mentioned, but I assume you could still unplug the seat heater connectors located under each seat and take a resistance measurement using an Ohm meter to determine at least if the wires are still intact. You have something very low in Ohms, like between 1 to 6 Ohms as it is a dead short, where as if you get nothing, like a large number, then you have an open and that means a wire has broken on the heating element mesh.

As far as the mirrors are concerned, my suspicion is that the two switches will need to be removed from the emergency brake console, taken apart and cleaned, and then re-greased with dielectric grease before assembly.

Hope this helps.

Matt

Thank you Matt.
I'm working in those switches for the mirrors today..
My instinct so far is that you are right.. or maybe its magical thinking on my part!

As for the wipers--two things--make sure the motor is grounded well and if that's not it--disconnect the link to the motor and operate the wiper arms through their arc. They (or one) can seize at the pivot. -- Dave

Just in case, check to make sure the wiper arms are firmly attached to their mounts. Some time back one wiper on my 850 came loose and it would hardly move. Retightened and I was good to go...

Will I buy another Volvo??? We'll see....
