Some Volvo 240 Questions... 200 1990

All,

As I'm trying to keep my cars on the road, the best place to find parts is the PNP, to that end, can anyone give me some good answers to the following questions???

Door Card(s):
1. How do the inside of the door cards get wet?, and
2. How to stop them from getting wet, and
3. If you can't stop them from getting wet, or don't know how they are getting wet, is there a way or product to use that will water proof them????

Sedan rear seat:
1. How do properly remove it, and
2. is the back seat rug in the sedan that same as that in the wagon???

Thanks in advance,

Matt

    Some Volvo 240 Questions... 200 1990

    hi matt,
i had a couple of door panels with crumbling carboard, the lower half.

i didn't tuck the plastic into the door to drain and the water accumulated on the cardboard, over time.

    i fixed my panels by
    1. made a straight line across the board on the good part right above where the bad part was.
    2. carefully pulling, peeling apart the old board away from the door panel and padding.
    3. bought mdf (medium density fiberboard) at your local home repair big box store.
    4. cut to shape and mated the new board to the door panel board for fit.
    5. then sprayed 3m fabric adhesive to the fiber padding and new board and squeezed together, but not enough to flatten the padding.
    6. let it dry and reinstall.

best part, you can keep your original panels.

i made sure that they were protected this time. an idea, maybe apply some waterproof spray sealant of some sort?, get the edges, too.

i think i applied some 3m rubber undercoating on them--good stuff. let it dry well and apply in a well-ventilated area. wear ppe (personal protective equipment).

    best,

    Some Volvo 240 Questions... 200 1990

In our '90 744, the rear seat bottom cushion holders were shaped like a turtle shell with a slot that went down as well as forward and rearwards.

If you pushed too hard on the seat, the holder went into the rear slot, holding the seat down.

You had to push the bottom of the seat cushion rearward about 1/2 inch to use the center slot to release the seat.

Push all you want, but it is the bottom of the wire frame in the seat that must move back the right amount, the top of the seat does not count, The picture of the seat with the jack, shows the jack set too high.

    Door Card Preservation 200 1990

Replace your window scrapers. Clean the drains.

Make sure your vapor barrier is in place with the tuck-ins directing water from the window to the drains and not the card.

      Art,

      Thanks on the pictures.

The window scrapers have been replaced, so that is not the issue.

I believe the issue is that the plastic may not be situated correctly and will need to be looked at.

Is there any kind of paint or sealant that you or others have used to seal the door cards from moisture penetration?

      Thanks in advance,

      Matt

I have not used this on the cards.
I have used it on my wood kayak paddles.

Sedan Rear Bench Seat Removal 200 1990

Couple interesting topics in your questions. Each deserves its own thread.

The challenge of pulling the bench seat became one of mine a few years ago, on a 1990 sedan. It wasn't a case of not knowing how; I'd been lifting them most of my life since the 70's, and the 240 is no different in that respect from a 1970 Dodge police cruiser.

The method was to use a knee as a pusher against the front of the cushion. But when attempting to install the rear camera for a dash cam in my grandson's 244, it became a challenge I didn't expect. I'm still not sure whether the seat got stiff with age or the seat lifter, but I resorted to a helical form of lever as you can see below before achieving success.

Volvo changed the retainer profile for the '89 model year, making it a bit more secure, as the following will illustrate. First, see the bracket in the '79:

Then see how it got changed.

I hope this helps you visualize what you need to do. Here's how I eventually made it easy on myself.

I would rather try to carry 10 plastic grocery bags in each hand than take 2 trips to bring my groceries in.

I believe the back seat area carpet is different in the wagon to accommodate the wagon's different rear seat base attachments.

    Some Volvo 240 Questions... 200 1990

Newer cars keep door cards from getting wet by placing a plastic sheet/vapor barrier between the card and the inner door panel. The plastic usually held in place by a thin bead of butyl.

To remove the rear seat - the lower cushion has clips along the lower edge that hold it in place, one clip on each side. Along the lower edge (near floor) on each side - simultaneously push towards the rear of the car while lifting towards the roof. The lower edge of the seat will move back and up releasing from the chassis mounted clip. Release both clips and remove lower seat. You’ll then see a metal clip on each side of the upper that must be bent “straight” to release the sides of the seat back. Once the sides are free lift up on the seatback (towards roof) and the back will release from two clips right below the package tray. See if there’s a youtube vid - pics worth a thousand words on this one.
