Door Hinge Replacement 200 1988

https://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/BodyDoors.htm

FAQs above don't address this issue.

I have a 4 door 1988 240 DL N/A with about 300k. The door hinges seem fine. My Toyota is a 2 door, newer with half the miles and the driver's side door hinges need replacement.

Anyone have to replace door hinges on a 240? If so, at what mileage?

thanks

Keep your hinges lubed and by miracle of miracles, you'll have less trouble with your door handles!

Yep, I grease mine with the same gun/fitting. Last round used up my last cartridge so ordered a new set. Sitting on the workbench now. And I do grease the wheels and the spring that rubs against them.

Thanks. I have a 1980, but no grease gun. Would any grease gun do, or is there a particular type?

You can use any grease gun but you must have the "needle" type nozzle for it. If the hinges haven't been greased in a very long time what's in there may be solid and not allow fresh grease to flow. You can use a propane torch to heat the hinge to loosen/melt the old grease. You know it's taken grease when you see it flow out the top and bottom of each hinge. - Dave

            Thanks.

By the tip, do you mean the first tip of the three shown at the 3 O'clock position in this photo?

This is also the grease gun I plan to buy. It will be my first, so I'll have to go on YouTube to figure out how to set it up, especially install the cartridges.

I'm also planning to buy the Lucas Oil Red-N-Tacky grease.

            https://www.amazon.com/Lucas-Oil-10005-Tacky-Grease/dp/B000ARPVO8/ref=sr_1_4?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1548426267&sr=1-4&keywords=lucas+oil+red+grease

It received better reviews than Mobil 1, but both products settle/leak over time in the cartridge. Is it prudent to remove the cartridge from the gun? I could store it in my basement, which gets in the 40s at night.

            Thanks

Correct, the tip on the left. I've always used grease meant for front end lubrication so I don't know how to answer your question about storage. You could flip the direction of storage periodically to avoid the mess of removing and re-installing the cartridge. You'll notice the tiny steel ball set into each grease point. The needle has to be small enough to push that spring loaded check ball (have no idea how they make the darn thing) open. Having the pump action work with one hand is a plus--you do have to put some pressure behind the needle to get the grease in. - Dave

so Art, before you get asked.

Dear 1908242DLa, Volvo changed the hinges in the mid-80's. The later version does not have that grease fitting. It is not possible to inject grease.
My 87 and I'm sure your 88 has the newer style hinge.

Looking at Art's first pic. notice those 2 wheels and the U spring that rides on them. The failure to Lube those wheels can cause the U Spring to Snap. When this happens there is Nothing to constrain the door from swinging all the way out Beyond reason and at times violently. What happens is that the metal on the door, that the hinge bolt to RIPS. This happens to the lower hinge, which is where that Wheel/Spring is located.

So this requires that you not only replace the hinge, because the U Spring Broke, but you will have to remove the Door so that you can spot-weld the tear in the metal. If you just replace the hinge --- relatively easy job, you will eventually enlarge that Tear ubless you are really carefull to not allow the door swing full wide.

Thank you both. On my 1988, I just sprayed them and will do so every three months.

My 1980 has the same grease fittings. What brand of grease gun do you recommend? The FAQs are pretty flexible about the type of grease; is there a type of grease you recommend?
