fuel pump relay 200 1983

Hey! My '83 245 won't start even with new fuel pump relay, but runs fine with jumper. Any clue why this is? Also, the female component in car has 4 terminals, 87a center terminal appears to be a blank. Pretty sure it's jumped from 30-85! Is the main fuel pump possibly asking too much from the relay, as it is failing? Thanks for any advice! I'm lost.-Gwen

Need just a tad more info. Is your '83 a turbo? Is it a US market car? Where are you putting the jumper when it runs OK? What color wires are on the relay's socket, and where is the relay located? Where did you get the fuel pump relay and what is its part number?

This info will help identify the parts you are describing.

      No turbo, I believe US market, passenger kickside, with Bosch Jetronic #0 280 000 510 ECU. Jumper from 86-87, red/yellow to red/blue. New relay parts# 0 332 209 158. Old relay replaced Parts# 0 332 204 172. Thanks-Gwen

ECU fuel pump relay coil signal 200 1983

My guess is the transistor in the ECU responsible for operating the relay has been destroyed. One way to do that instantly, in this circuit, is to jumper either 86 or 30 to 85 (the blue/green) when attempting to start the car.

You can test whether my guess is correct by connecting a jumper from ground to 85 (instead of your 86-87a jumper). If the car starts and runs, you'll need to repair or replace the ECU. This may have been done before on your car, as I think the 83's came stock with the -503 ECU until '84 when the -510 ECU was used in new and replacements.

Thanks for your info. I've decided to run it, as is, until it warms up (somewhere near Montpelier) and turn the key off if I crash!

OK, I'll keep my family clear of Vermont this Winter. :)

Did love the skiing at Sugarbush.

Beware of the pretty drawings on Dave's site; they apply to different cars. The first is for k-jet (turbo in your year) and the second is for later LH-jet cars where the system and fuel pump relays are combined. Here's a map that matches your car with some added notes you can ignore. And if you decide to look into the trouble and find the ECU is faulty, I've successfully talked persevering folks (with a soldering iron) through a repair before.

Whoa! That's awesome. Will seriously consider that, as I do stained glass and work on my own car, so I know I can do it! I'll be contacting you on this again, soon.-Thanks
