240 Head Gasket 1991

I've got everything ready to do my head gasket, new fuel injectors, seals, hushers, timing belt and all the other belts. Do I need to apply gasket sealant at any point or just go straight in with the gaskets? It's already got new plugs and wires, new distributor cap and rotor and I replaced the odometer gear and went through most of the switches and fuses and cleaned them up. Anything else I should do while I'm in it that deep? This is my first post so I hope I'm not beating a dead horse around here....

I don't see any mention of a water pump--you should absolutely replace that. You probably won't need any sort of sealants. I didn't use any when I did mine (aside from a dab where the valve cover gasket needs to bend).

You mentioned hushers. Have you checked your valve clearances? I know you get the hushers and fuel injector seals with the head gasket kit, but it's not strictly necessary to replace them at this time... and if you're doing the hushers, you're taking the cam off and may need to buy valve shim disks because those new hushers will change the clearance a little.

When I got to this point on my second Volvo, I decided to go for it and replace the valve stem seals, order some shims, and lap all of the valves. I think it's worth the time invested in labor, but you'd have to order some tools and parts.

Other stuff you might consider doing when the head is off are cam, crank, and intermediate shaft seals. While you're working on the intake, take the opportunity to clean the throttle body and make sure it's adjusted correctly.

I disagree -- you should check and adjust your clearances either with the old hushers (squashed) in place--or none at all. You cannot get a proper feel for the clearance if new hushers are in place. The new ones will flatten out soon enough and they wont interfere with running clearance--only your ability to determine correct clearance. I would also suggest you replace them in any case -- unless you know they were recently redone.
Another poster suggested being sure you removed all the water pump bolts -- You wouldn't be the first person to miss a bolt :-( And sometimes the water pipe can seem to be "stuck". -- Dave

Ok, I'm ready to button this thing back up but I cant find the torque specs and tightening order for the cam caps....Water pump is off and in the trash. I lapped all the valves, put in new valve seals and silencers and checked everything with guages and calipers and it all seems to be in the green. Still have to change the in-tank fuel pump and strainer-bag but shouldnt be too awful. Thanks again everyone! On the way!

I put in a new crankshaft seal and intermediate seals as well. I have a brand new water pump but the old one refuses to release itself from the car...

Have you removed all 5 bolts/nuts, plus the coolant return line?

All the bolts are out but there is some seriously sinister sealant holding it onto the cooling pipe....I'm planning on checking lash while I have it that far open. I was looking at the new water pump I have and it does not have the mounting studs for the pulley attached like the old one. Do I need to get new studs or can I reuse them from the old pump? Thanks for the replies, as soon as the rain lets up, I'm going to yank the head.

Use the double nut method to remove the studs from the old pump and to install them in the new pump. I've never had to install new studs--literally have done dozens of water pumps--never bought a pump with studs already installed. - Dave
