Totally Weird Vibration 200

I have a weird vibration on my ‘93. Happens when I’m on the throttle. If I let off, it eases/stops. Returns as soon as I throttle back up. It’s not wheels or tires. I’m thinking it’s the driveshaft carrier gone. Any thoughts?

Turns out a u-joint was, shall we say, a bit worn. Replaced all three plus the carrier bearing. No more problems.

Thanks for the update and feedback!

This is not so unusual considering conditions and age it did well!
They are very reliable, I think!

I just replaced both motor mounts on a 240 with a similar problem. And found a partially-frozen u-joint on another car.

Check trans mount, carrier-bearing support, torque-rod bushings, u-joints ... all mentioned in other replies.

Listen for noises too. And check everything as multiple failures aren't uncommon.

A sticky carrier bearing usually makes a high-pitched whine; but thet devolcves into a vibration.

I would first check the bushings in the torque rods (connects the rear axle to the body and maintains the driveshaft-to-differential angle) and then, if OK, suspect sticky universal joints. Unfortunately, I've only been able to confirm u-joints need attention with the driveshaft removed from the car, and that's why I keep spares on the shelf, as who wants to do that job twice while waiting for parts.

You'll see how the carrier bearing and support is doing when you check the above. It is probably OK if you can mitigate the vibration by being gentle with the accelerator pedal.

If I touch the gas, it vibrates. That’s why I’m thinking the carrier.

I'd also pay close attention to the motor mounts (and related parts like exhaust) as the motor shifts when throttle is applied. As for checking the driveshaft -- Art is correct that checking the U-joints for for smooth motion throughout their range can only be done with the driveshaft disconnected you can observe first if there's any indication of rust stains at the joints. Earlier models did have issues with the transmission (auto) output shaft bushing getting worn causing a "power on" vibration--but the '93 - if original - should have a bearing in that spot. - Dave

Engine mounts and torque rods are good. I’ll replace all three u-joints while I have the shafts out. There’s two different size bearings shown for the carrier. My car is an automatic if that is the difference, otherwise, is it 44.5mm or 45mm? The carrier bushing definitely has movement.
