1961 544 rear support arm 444-544

Does anyone have the torque value for the support arm to body bolt?
Removed the temporary mounts and am now Ready to install the Ford Ranger rear end using new machined poly mounts and poly support arm bushings.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Ray J.

Thanks Eric. I get the clamp, sleeve and base plate back tomorrow morning from the painter and hope to have it in before I quit for the day.

Best

I could not find any, and I mean any, torque specs for mounting any of the rear suspension arms for any, and I mean any, of the pre-1975 Volvos and I have Volvo green books for almost all Volvos imported into the USA from 1958-1975.

So the next best reference is to find the recommended torque for a similar sized bolt.

The u-bolts are 14mm and assuming the u-bolts are 8.8 in hardness, equivalent to about a Grade 5, I found a torque spec of 100 lb/ft for a 14mm bolt.

I never found any either for any rear suspension bolts. I used a bolt torque spec sheet and set it to the low end of 80 ft. lbs.

Thanks for looking.

I'd also add that it's best to tighten suspension bolts with the car resting on its wheels in a ready to run condition. Give it a good bounce to settle the arms, springs, and shocks.

Hey Ray, are you still taking pix of the build? I still have a copy of the first ones way back when. Larry

Yes I am. I am getting all the painted parts back today to install the Ford Ranger rear end. Had it in with temp mounts while being painted.

The Chevy 4 cylinder with Toyota Supra 5-speed transmission are installed and after rear end is in place, I will start on the drive shaft. Have not decided on using the Supra two piece or a one piece drive shaft.

Have a good one.

Ray;

I am not a fan of Frankencars, but will remind you that the splinejoint of a two-piece drifeshaft is there for a good reason: To keep rear susp excursions from pushing/pulling on engine/trans assembly.

Cheers

A one-piece splined shaft can be used. Being a critical item it does have to be well engineered. That, of course, means a little more has to be spent. This company looks as if it could supply what you need. No connection to it.

I am not a fan of rat rods. I do like to travel and if a problem arises I can get an alternator, starter, water pump, etc. at any parts store. Cannot do that with a B16 4 cylinder with 6 volts.

My other car is a 1961 Morris Minor with a Twin cam 1600cc Toyota and 5-speed.

To each his own.

Best
