544 Dies 444-544

Hello All,

I have had a problem with my 544 stopping running off and on. I thought it was fuel related. I cleaned the tank fuel lines and put in a new filter, but still have the problem. Today it happened again and I wanted to bump the starter to move the car into a better place, and low in behold the car ran as long as I kept the key in the start position - with the starter running. What do you suppose is the deal with that?

I have a fairly old Crane fireball 7000 ignition. Any idea where the problem lies? Crane? Starter? Switch? Wiring? (the old coil has been removed and the armored cable broken into for the new coil)

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thanks
Bob

If the ignition had been left stock, I have no doubt it would still be running strong.
Does the Crane coil have a resistor in the circuit? If so, it is bypassed when the starter is activated. If the motor dies when the starter is not running, possibly the resistor is bad.
Turn the key to the on position and check to see if you have voltage to the coil.

A couple of additional points of information:

After sitting a while or overnight, the car will start normally and run fine for a half hour or so. Then back to the problem again. When trying to start it normally at this point, it will run for one or two seconds each try but that's all until it sits again or I hold the key in the start position.

The fact that it will start and run normally when cold but has problems after it warms up, in my way of thinking, points to an electronic problem....the Crane ignition.
Do you still have the stock distributer in the car?
Does the coil you are now using have an external resistor? If so, the next time it won't start, try bypassing the resistor with a temporary wire. Don't leave the jumper wire in place permanently as the coil will overheat.

        Good luck, Tom

          Thanks Tom,

The distributor is stock. The coil is Bosch Blue (I think with a built in resistor)

I think you are right - I may take out the crane and put the points back in.

The only modification I have made to my 65 544 is to break into the armored cable and replace the original coil with a Bosch blue coil. It does have an internal resistor. I kept the original dizzy with points and it runs great and is reliable. Checking the points every few thousand miles is not a problem. I feel like I can take a long trip with not much more than a screwdriver and a few wrenches and get back home. That's why I have a 544 without all the electronic problems of later models that are difficult to fix on the road.
Long live the super simple and reliable 544! Tom
