Volvo 960 $400 900

I am seeing a 1992 Volvo 960 for sale locally for $400CAN. Seller is saying that it 'needs a rear driveshaft.' I have a 940 myself but don't know much about the 960 other than the fact it has six cylinders instead of four and that I have been warned off that engine for years.

I could make an offer of less than 400 but would like to know if there are serious, expensive complications that could arise from the driveshaft problem.

She claims that it has less than 200,000 on the odometer. Body and paint look to be in good shape. Says it needs a clean.

Any thoughts?

Bob

I have a 960 wagon, which has a different rear suspension than the sedans. But, if you like this particular car and 960 parts cars are available in your neck of the woods, you can likely source a good used driveshaft inexpensively. Check out the emergency brake before you buy. Replacement parts are cheap, but installation is a b***h.

Rear driveshaft may = rear section of driveshaft or perhaps a rear CV joint
I have never owned a 960, so I’m not sure, but I believe the 960’s have CV joints attached to the rear differential that drive the rear wheels much like RWD BMW’s. 960’s have a multilink IRS not a solid rear axle like a 940.

Oh, make sure the timing belt has been changed per Volvo interval. Interference engine...

Will I buy another Volvo??? We'll see....
