1994 940T's Engine as Donor for 1988 240 N/A? 200 1994

I'm looking at a good deal for a stock and for a rebuilt engine from 1994 940Ts (944T and 945T, but I'm unsure which has a rebuilt engine). Both have automatic transmissions. Pics of the outside, albeit only of the front, show straight bodies. I don't have a lot of details at the time, but both are in 940Ts that reportedly run, and look like lien sales from an auto mechanic.

Is there a mileage cutoff for these engines?

I'm not sure what type of 4 cylinder engine (B230F?) it comes with. Importantly, can I convert them into N/A engines and put them in my 1988 240 N/A (300k miles with AW-70 transmission)?

I'm not a fan of turbos, but if the 940s are in good condition, are they keepers or money-pits?

Thanks

To add to 1pocket..'s response -- the distributor on 740/940 models run off the back of the camshaft - no room on a 240 and a B230FT (turbo motor) may not have the drive gear needed to relocate the distributor for auxiliary shaft operation.
Finding a NA240 motor should not be difficult and they can go hundreds of thousands of mileage and still be a good motor. I have an '89 245 for parts --will gladly sell the motor + AW70 trans for $150 if you take it out. - Dave

Thanks. I'm so grateful for this bulletin-board from keeping me out of trouble.

I know that the 1983-1984 turbos were not that great. I checked out the FAQs, and it looks like the turbos need more care and have more possible problems than N/As. All things equal, are the 1994 940Ts reliable?

Dave, where are you located?

The later 940 turbos are quite robust. Turbos from the 1990’s and up are built better and are longer lasting than the earlier turbos. I wouldn’t be afraid them. I own a turbo car with 213k and the turbo acts like new: no noise, no oil leaks and plenty of power.

Some years ago I drove a 93 940 turbo wagon with 300k that was for sale. It ran and felt like it had 70k on the clock. For comparison’s sake my 90 240 with 300k ran well but it was falling apart at the seams and was nowhere near as tight and solid feeling as the 940.

Thanks.

I've been unable to find out which B2* turbo engines were used in the 940s. Can anyone advise?

B230FT

Same engine as your 88 240 but beefed up and has oil squirters to keep the pistons cooler.

Buy a B230F for your 240. Too much work to swap in a B230FT and not cost effective either. If you want a turbo just buy a turbo car. A good 940 is a superior car to a 240. And this from a guy who owned his 90 240DL for 11 years!

Thanks. What is/are the model numbers of the engines in those 940s?

Couldn’t be simpler:
NA models - B230f
Turbo models - B230ft
