Thermostat Gasket Question 200 1988

For a 1988 240 N/A B230F with about 300k miles.

The FAQs recommend against using a gasket maker (eg Permatex) around the thermostat housing:

When replacing a thermostat with intact surfaces (i.e. no gouging), it's unclear whether the thermostat housing needs a paper gasket or no gasket at all. Please clarify. Thanks

Thermostat Gasket Question 200 1988

There is only a rubber seal that is mounted on the thermostat.

There is a groove on the inside of the seal which allows the seal to be mounted on the outer diameter of the metal disc.
