cracked vacuum connector repair; also fixes sticky shifter handles 900

The 940 has several vacuum lines which are hard plastic, and fit into rubber connectors.
I found one angled connector which had cracked enough to leak vacuum, and I repaired it by taking the connector out of the car, still attached to its sensor, and applying 2 coats of the rubber/plastic dip you can buy to coat tool handles. Let the first coat dry overnight.

The plastic liquid also worked a treat on my 93 940s shift handle, which had become sticky as it aged. Rather than pulling the shift handle and dipping it, I chose to apply the dip with a 1" wide brush. The plastic coating is also available in spray cans.

Dear GACyclops,

Hope you're well. This is a great idea, at least for vacuum hoses, rubber/plastic coatings on strong substrates (e.g., if there's steel under a failed plastic coating, this rubber coating will prevent corrosion.

May I leverage your inspiration? I'd use the yellow rubber coating, because that will ease finding a crack, should one recur. Spotting a crack on a black fitting isn't easy, unless one is close-up. But a crack in a yellow coating should be easier to find.

Please submit your idea for inclusion in the site's FAQs.

Thanks again!

Yours truly,

Spook
