I am in the process of rebuilding the tailgate/latch of my 1800ES with new parts and am having a problem removing the 4-pin ring nut that secures the internal latch assembly to the tailgate handle. So far, I have tried generous applications of PB Blaster and attempting to turn with a snap ring plier without damaging the pin slots, but the ring nut doesn't budge. I think I need a 4-pin spanner nut socket I can use with a socket wrench, but haven't been able to find one with the right size. Here are the dimensions of the ring nut measured with calipers:
O.D. 26.8 mmm
I.D. 3 mm
pin slot width: 2.3 mm

Information on where I can purchase such a 4-pin socket or another way to remove the ring nut would be much appreciated. If I can't get it off, I will have to install the latch assembly in the old handle.

I have repaired at least a dozen of those for my customers.

I use a small punch and hammer and lightly tap in 1 of the 4 pin slots in rotation.

Thanks. Will try that. If that solves my problem, it would beat buying another tool that may or not work.

I could make a tool using a grinder on a socket, but since I haven't run into 1 I couldn't loosen using a small punch, I haven't found it necessary.

The ring nut broke loose on the third time around with a 1/16" punch. Now, I can get on to other things. So much for that part of my E/ES manual.

Do you happen to be in the Seattle area or across Puget Sound on the Olympic Peninsula? I owe you one of our local microbrews or a different favorite beverage of yours.
