crankcase ventilaion by-pass idea 200 1988

Can I drill a 1/4 inch vent hole in the oil-filler cap on top of the Valve Cover to by-pass the crank case over-pressure issue? Or, it there a better way to avoid over-pressure in the engine?

Perhaps you should look into (link) cleaning your flame trap.

Agreed, I suggest testing/checking all the PCV components for clogs and replace or clean those parts.

Unless it is new, replace the flame trap screen, check for clogs in the flame trap hoses, the breather box and its hose. Replace or clean any clogged parts and then test for airflow.

I tossed the flame trap screen on both 90 240 and 95 850 without any issues. It really isn’t necessary IMHO. It just causes clogs. Volvo stopped using them by 1998? and released a service update stating exactly that.

I did toss the flame trap screen and checked for good flow through all the line and now am happy with that and am good to go!

My opinion on the crankcase vent system is you want to suck out from the crankcase any fuel or water condensation that becomes vapor when the engine heats up. However, connecting just a hose from crankcase to intake may suck a lot of atomized oil during engine over run when the oil is hot. That oil is then going onto the intake valves and into the combustion chamber to become carbon.

I like a good (large) catch can to separate the oil from the vapors that you do want to burn. Also, you should include an inline check valve to prevent the possibility of a back fire into the intake from going to the crankcase.

Crank case over pressure has long been an issue with almost all engines.

Simple systems consisted of a vent tube about 3/4 inch from the crankcase (low on the side of the engine) that pointed downward and was open to the atmosphere.

Later systems consisted of a hose back to the cars carburetor.

Your car surely has some sort of system, and it is clogged.

    Try the 700/900 FAQ.

A mechanic told me that my '988 745 GLE had a 240 engine, so I am pretty sure that the FAQ will help you - also, since the FAQ is very extensive, this FAQ will help you with many issues.
