Noise from rear brakes 200 1991

The 91 240 is almost back on the road. However, there is a very loud noise from the rear when braking. The safety inspection revealed nothing wrong with the rear brake pads or rotors. It may be related to the backing plate, which seems to have a couple of rust holes but seems to be clear of the wheel itself.

I can't figure out what is different back there when the brakes are on vs off that causes such a noise.

Check the rear bushings. Both Trailing Arm and Torque Rod. When they are bad, it can sound like metal on metal under braking.

We replaced the torque rod bushings thinking that was the cause. I will check the TABs but dread replacement. I did it once on this car already a few years back.

It's a very loud grinding noise only on braking. Not the typical sound of rusty disks until they get cleaned off.

This is strange. Usually a loud grinding noise when applying the brakes would indicate a stuck caliper with worn out pads. Since the pads are fine you will need to look at other causes. Nothing sticking? Fluid good? Also look for something not lined up or fitting exactly right. Maybe a shim is rubbing etc.
