Oil Light Stays on for 4-5 Seconds on Every Start Up 200 1988

1988 Volvo 240DL N/A with about 300k. Since I got it a month ago, the oil light stays on for 4-5 seconds every time I start the engine. This is despite a new oil filter, synthetic oil (I put in 5W-30 for better cold-start protection), and, when cold, dipstick saying oil level is full (at the very top of the dipstick "full" area. There are no oil leaks, as shown by lack of oil under the car and the dipstick reading being constant over the past month.

IMO, your oil choice is OK. Don't know if Mobil-1 is your synthetic, but their 5W30 actually has a higher viscosity at high temperatures than their 10W30. Owner's book recommendations of 30 years ago don't really apply to modern oil. (Oils for flat tappet/pushrod engines is another story, but Volvo hasn't had one of those in a car since around the mid-70's)

The owner's manual for my 2016 XC60 T6 calls for synthetic 5W30 only and that engine has a lot more stress and high temperature conditions than your 240.

CB is correct on the most likely cause of your delayed oil pressure. You need a filter with an anti-drainback valve (one that works). The preferred choice of most people here is the Mann W917 which was the filter Volvo put on at the factory and which dealers used - when they serviced 240's. Available from our usual internet suppliers.

Another good choice is the WIX 51311 (sold by NAPA with their logo as 1311).

Harbor Freight sell an oil pressure test kit which removes all doubt about the warning light sensor and tells you what is really going on. Item 62621 at $22.

I'd want to get a gauge on it so you can see what's actually happening.

First of all you shud use the Grade of engine oil spec'd by Volvo, which is 10W30.
Using 5W30 for "cold start protection" ???? where do you live? Near the Canadian border??? many days that are below 10deg F.

The Oil pressure light shud go out 1 to 3 seconds. One of the reasons it may take longer is that the Oil Filter has a failed or poorly working FlowBack valve. A bad valve lets the oil get sucked out of the filter after the engine is shut off, leaving the oil filter itself Low on Oil. When you start the engine again the oil pump must fill up the filter first. An easy check on this is to remove the filter after the engine has been off, say overnight.
If this proves to be the case, use another brand of Filter.

There are other reasons for the Oil Pressure light delay. But the first is usually the Filter.
