Weird rust spots to watch for 200 1993

While changing out a bad rear caliper* I was poking around waiting for my bleeding assistant and noticed some bulges in the undercoat on the frame just aft of the upper spring seat. Uh-oh. I started scraping and ended up with a perfect, business card-sized rectangle of rust. Fortunately, the steel is pretty thick back there, and I caught it in time. After cleaning it up I checked the other side. It looked fine through the undercoating, but poking around with a screwdriver revealed an identical rusty rectangle underneath! Something went wrong back here in production. Anyone else ever come across this? Sorry I didn't think to take pics before I treated it.

Best,
joe b in pdx

* a good reminder to check pad wear even after recent replacement. A stuck outer piston consumed an entire pad in about 15k miles! Mrs. joe b in pdx smartly noticed the sudden grinding noise, drove gingerly home, and saved the rotor.

Weird rust spots to watch for 200 1993

I had the same issue. My 93 wagon was rear ended and totaled a couple of years ago.

Both 1/4 panels buckled, tailgate was caved in, and it closed the gap at the rear of the rear doors. It was a beautiful car. I had just repainted the hood and roof a year earlier because the clearcoat had started to breakdown.

I decided to save it and keep my cost down by gathering all of the parts and striping everything off. Then all the body shop had to do was pull it straight and paint it, and I would put it all back together.

The second day the manager gives me a call, and says we have a problem and I need to come in. The problem was just as you describe, only mine were rusted through, both sides.

He had to sublet that part out to a guy that was handy with a torch, to cut out the old and weld in the new.

So it is an issue that we need to look out for whenever we have the rear wheels off. I don't know if it's just a 93 thing or more widespread.

Weird rust spots to watch for . classic philosophy needed 200 1993

hi sages- truly it is said by the great philosophers ,"even in a volvo 240, rust never sleeps." maybe its like the warnings against creeping communism back in 54. sadly rust repair is an expensive item and a tempting invitation for a clipper mechanic to turn a bunt into a homerun. hold your noses and hold your wallets. thanks tons oldduke
