Armrest -> Disassemble/Re-assemble 900 1997

Hi guys,

Today I removed the armrest below with the goal to disassemble it, take it to an upholstery shop and replace the worn leather.
I did not have the courage to touch it yet, I am pretty sure I can drill the rivet(s) and take it apart, but what scares me is how I can put it back together?
I have no clue how those rivets are working, has anybody attempted this before in this forum?

    Dear Metallo,

Hope you're well. I'll bet the upholstery shop knows - or can quickly figure out - how to remove the rivets and how to replace them, once they've emplaced new leather. Ask them.

If not, post back. As I recall, the rivets are "pop" rivets. You can replace them with standard pop rivets of the correct diameter (probably 3/16"), if you have a pop rivet tool.

These rivets are "set", when the tool pulls on the center rod at end of which there's a ball, wider than is the rod. This pulling bulges the rivet shaft, causing it to grip tightly, as the ball cannot pass through the backing plate.

I do not know the length of the rivet used on the leather armrest. The 3/16" pop rivet - which can be bought at any home improvement (DIY) store - comes in various lengths, certaom;u up to 1/2".

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

      Hi Spook,

They know for sure how to remove the rivets, but since they have quoted me an arm and a leg, I will provide them the leather and the parts to be upholstered in order to same some money.

I do most of my Volvo maintenance myself anyhow, every time you ask somebody else to do a repair they always state:
Ohh... this is a Volvo and therefore is different, not as easy as another car to work with, it requires more time and blah blah blah.
Better I stop here because I do not want to get upset :)

So, is the best way to remove a pop rivet, by drilling it?

      Thank you,
      Alex

        Dear Metallo,

Hope you're well. If you think the upholsterers are dishonest, go elsewhere. Those, who exaggerate the difficulty of a job, can't be trusted. At all. With anything.

Drilling-out five pop rivets will take w-a-a-a-a-a-y less than 10 minutes.

Start with a 1/8"-diameter drill bit. If that doesn't remove the rivet's flat head (visible on the surface), go up to 5/32", then to 3/16". I doubt a rivet bigger than 3/16" was used.

Keep the drill bit exactly perpendicular to the surface, into which the pop rivet sits. You've done the job when the rivet's flat head separates from the shaft, which is not visible, since the shaft is inside the armrest.

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook
