I'm replacing my front brake rubber hoses. On both sides, when using the 11mm flare wrench on the one metal line with a "U" shaped thingy, I'm rounding off the nut. What is the purpose of the U thingy, and is it somehow preventing me from loosening the nut? Thanks.

    Those are spacers and they need to be reused.

    Unfortunately your nut rounding experience is not unique.

    Try some penetrating oil, but be prepared to replace any hard brake lines if the nuts are rounded.

      Why is this spacer on only one of the 2 hoses and do you know the function? And why on both sides would each one with the spacer be frozen? Thanks.

      I don't think it's the retainer which is attached to the body. This is a "clip"? on the hard line where it meets the rubber line.
