Need help with newly acquired 240DL 200 1988

284k+ on on-functioning odometer, AT with overdrive that works. Last month, it passed smog, but there are no maintenance records, eg PS reservoir and AT levels empty.

What does yellow shift arrow on and off mean? I can't tell whether overdrive is on with the shift arrow on or off.

While driving, I hear a humble/rum. What's the cause?

Car just started stumbling/shaking at idle. What are the causes?

Windshield wipers are REALLY slow, even in fast mode. Is the wiper motor bad and/or power?

So that I'm not missing anything, what other maintenance should I do (eg please specify "all fluids should be changed)?

Thanks

1908... 1. Put fluid into the P/S reservoir and transmission and find where they leak.
    2. When the yellow shift light is on it is telling you to upshift to OD. There should be a noticeable drop in motor rpm with the shift to OD.
    3. Not sure I understand what a humble/rum is but can guess a rumble? a humming whine? - something along those lines. Could be --front or rear wheel bearing or driveshaft center support bearing.
    4.Look for a disconnected spark plug lead--or a broken/cracked vacuum hose as a start.
    5. Could be--ground not sufficient--motor going south--wiper post freezing up (disconnect the arm under the dash to the motor and operate the wiper arms by hand--they should swivel with no resistance).
    6. Yes - all fluids should be changed - motor oil - trans oil (after you discover what leaks) - differential oil - coolant flush with fresh antifreeze. Pull loose the top timing cover (one screw from behind, one screw in front) -- you just need to loosen it enough to see the timing belt condition--change it immediately if cracking shows. Reset the tensioner if the belt looks good. - Dave

      Thanks.

It's not a whine, more like a hum, like a generator machine sound...mmmmmmmmmmmmm
Can you help me figure that out?

About the wiper, you wrote, "disconnect the arm under the dash to the motor and operate the wiper arms by hand." Do you mean in the firewall behind the engine, or in the cabin/passenger compartment?

About the orange/yellow arrow, I have an automatic transmission, so should I push the button on the gear shifter until the the yellow light goes out?

Instead of a power steering and transmission leak, I filled up the power steering with fluid before driving it home. In fact, I overfilled it (3/4 quart of Type F). When I drove about 50 miles, I checked. It was half full, so I filled it up again. Is that more likely due to the fluid being empty or a massive leak? By the way, steering was rachety and noisy before fluid, turns like a dream after.

Is there a synthetic Type F ATF that I can put into the power steering fluid reservoir prolong the power steering system life, given its lack of maintenance, or is Type F dino adequate?

It is possible that the owner never put fluid in either in the power steering and transmission, or is that wishful thinking and I really have a leak?

      Thans

        190...
        1. Still comes down to front or rear wheel bearings or driveshaft center support. You will need to lift the front and spin each wheel in turn to listen for bearing rumble. If the brakes drag too much to get a good spin take the wheels off and squeeze the pads back (but remember to pump the brakes before driving off). The rear is more difficult to discern--it will take jacking the rear (one wheel at a time if you don't have a limited slip rear) support the car properly and use a long screwdriver, 3/8 extension, or other piece of handy metal as a stethoscope to place against the very end of the axle tube while the wheel is spinning in gear- compare the noise one side to the other to determine if one is louder.
        2. Inside the cabin-remove the "over the knee" cover to expose the bottom of the wiper motor. If you take out the glove box you'll have a better view. Unhook the link to the wiper motor drive - that'll leave the wiper pivots free to check for any binding. If you have to change the motor you'll need to remove the nut and link on the motor drive to lift the motor out.
        3. Volvo's thinking is that driving with the OD engaged should be the normal position (lamp OFF). Disable the OD (upshift lamp ON) for climbing grades (so there's no "hunting" between OD and 3rd) or towing.
        4. Only you can determine if there's a massive leak. Until you run the engine and put the steering through a few cycles can you be sure the system is full.
        5. I'm sure there is - check with your local parts house. I use ATF in my 300k 1980 245.
        6. Anything is possible :-) -- Dave
