Thoughts about 745 Wagon with Brown ATF? 700 1989

$1500 price firm.

Strengths:
136k miles (I verified that odometer works)
passed smog
clean title
I have a junkyard AW7x in my basement with clear fluid when I got it, but don't know if it's okay
shifts okay when driving

Weaknesses
ATF color is light brown, not burnt
ATF fluid is normal cold (forgot to check warm)
Car shakes for 1/2 second when parked and shift from P to D and P to R, but not D to P or R to P
conventional oil changes
unknown date of last ATF flush, if ever
roof paint came off (see prior post from yesterday)
intermittent howling noise, about every 7 seconds at rest
steering wheel shakes on decelerating
rpms about 3500 around 45mph before shifting up (does arrow in dash mean overdrive is on or off?)
when turning on the lights, the windshield wipers come on
when putting on left turn signal, dashlight "bulb" comes on, but all turn signal lights come on
unknown when timing belt, water pump, and coolant were last changed

Shaking when shifting out of Park could be a bad tranny or engine mount.

Steering shaking could be a lot of things. Strong possibilities are out of balance or damaged tires, bad engine mount or a bad front end part.

The car is almost 30 years old so any parts that depend on rubber are probably toast if original and have not been previously replaced. Rubber deteriorates with time. Take a close look at tranny mount (cheap), engine mounts, strut mounts, ball joints, tie rods etc.....

      Thanks.

All four tires are newer, maybe a few months old.

The steering wheel vibration only occurs when braking at speeds greater than 40 mph.

Would warped brake rotors cause this problem?

Yup, sounds like warped rotors. However, my 90 244DL did that and it was bad ball joints. My Passat wagon does that now and it is because the car has its original struts and they are tired. Replaced tie rods, front rotors and pads a year ago. Ball joints good.

One other thing to check. I never owned a 740, but as I recall 740's and 940's front end conical rod/radius arm bushings are prone to premature wear. See link below. FYI - the 700/900 FAQ could be a great resource for you! Click on FAQ button upper left top of page this page.

Note that the tires may be new but it is worthwhile to check that they were balanced and an alignment was done.

I wouldn't worry about the ATF fluid being light brown. As long as it isn't black and doesn't smell burnt you should be okay. Those AW70/71/72 trannies are normally bulletproof. I put 300k+ on the AW70 (original tranny) in my 90 240 and it was still going when I sold it...
