I'm looking a buying a 740 wagon with faded paint (or clear coat?) on the roof, but not the hood. Although the roof is dirty, wiping off a sample portion of the roof didn't change the color.

There's no rust of peeling of the clearcoat. However, there are significant areas where the gray paint came off and it's white underneath.

Thoughts about how to repair the faded paint?

If you want the repair to rival the quality of a Volvo paint job, the seller will have to pay you to take the car!

Examine the hood carefully - you might want to paint it at the same time.

I painted the top of my 745 down to 1 inch below the line where the body turns from horizontal to vertical , and added a thin vinyl stripe to cover the break.

Have a female pick a nice color for the two-tone paint job.

No repair that will work. Have to repaint. It is clearcoat.

Guessing on the cost of bodywork is difficult. If you have a body shop that you are familiar with ask them for a "ballpark" estimate. Or call Maaco, they might give you an estimate over the phone.
