240 windshield wiper assy broken 200 1993

My windshield wiper arms got out of sync and stopped moving. I could still hear the motor running, but wiper arms do not move. I removed the glove box and the radio. Under the passenger side wiper arm, under the dash, the entire assembly fell off the shaft. Poor design, as nothing but friction is holding this together. No screws or clips. The two arms (under the dash) and cables are off. My question is, what'e the best (easiest) way to fix this? This appears to be a real PITA type job. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I'm trying to understand what the nature of your problem is---are you saying the cable "drum" on the underside of the passenger side wiper shaft came off the shaft? If so--that's a highly unusual failure. I did once experience a shaft seizure on the driver's side of a 240 which required removing the shaft and drum, renewing the seal (homemade), lubing and reinstalling the shaft/drum and linkage arm -- Dave

Wiper Shaft Repair 200 1993

"...that's a highly unusual failure."

Two weeks ago I would have agreed, having only heard of one incident written up here:

This page is maintained by a VCOA club leader who shares some tips on JB-Welding a drive pulley stripped from its shaft:
Zen of Volvo 240 Wiper Linkage http://www.jimjmorris.com/cvcoa/wipers.htm

The link doesn't seem to work this morning. Maybe Jim has it down.

However since then, it happened on my #1 daughter's '93, and I see over on TB where several folks have chimed in on having fixed the same in response to an unrelated drive issue posed just last week.

Here's my fix illustrated: Notes on 240 Volvo Windscreen Wiper Shaft Repair or if you scroll the RWD page you'll find my post on it from earlier this month: Wipers Out which was a silly attempt to revive this slow forum with some "historic and folkloric" wastes of your all's time.

Hi,

I surprised Art Benstein hasn't jump on this post since he is the author of this information that I'm about to link you up to.
He is a very good documentarian of our 240 Volvos. Lots of pictures to take the guesswork out of how the whole thing goes together.

Check this site out:

I'm sure you can find out what happened under there.
Just use some backward thinking as most of us have had plenty of that going on in our lives! (:-)
