Dear jd620,
Hope you're well. The upper trim strip - that closest to the roof - may still be available, depending on your car's chassis number. Ask your Volvo dealer if part #3536962 will fit on your vehicle. If so, this part will cost about $155 at a U.S.-based Volvo dealer.
Windshield trim pieces from an S/V90 likely will fit, or can be made to fit. The main difference between windshield trim strips on 940s and S/V90s is that the 940s had an upper corner piece (#3538563), not present on the S/V90. Even so, I'd guess that the S/V90 trim pieces will work on a 940, because these strips mount on a plastic clip #1342004, which dlip is used on 940s and S/V90s.
These trim mounting clips (#1342004) are placed on the windshield itself when it is installed. These trim mounting clips are embedded in the adhesive/sealer that secures the windshield to the steel frame. Thus, a broken clip cannot easily be replaced. So, great care must be taken when removing/installing these trim strips.
I doubt any other model's windshield trim pieces will fit either as to contours or mounting method.
On an S/V90, the left side windshield trim strip is #9447825 ($60) and the right side windshield trim strip is #9447826 ($82). The bottom trim strip is #6848301 ($100).
If the trim stip rust is light, then I'd not replace the factory-installed trim stips. Rather, I'd sand the rusted areas and apply to the entire trim strip an epoxy-based appliance paint. This paint is usually available in black.
Painting avoids the risk of bending the trim strips during removal and/or damaging the trim stip mounting clips.
So, before sanding, I'd mask the painted area of the roof right up to the trim stip edge. I'd then hand-sand to remove rust from the trim strip. Once I removed the rust, I'd then cover the entire windshield, hood, and roof with thin plastic sheeting. Spray paint micro-droplets can travel a long way. Completely covering the roof and hood ensures no damage to the rest of the paintwork from fresh paint "over-spray".
Hope this helps.
Yours faithfully,
Spook
