Oxygen Sensor Tips for 1980 240 DL? 200 1980

I read the FAQs and have the following unanswered questions.

They recommend a 22mm oxygen sensor socket with a side slot for the wire, but I can only find 7/8".

Is 7/8" an okay size to use, or do I risk damage by using it? If not, any suggestions as to where I can find them?

My Toyota requires an off-set oxygen sensor socket for one of the oxygen sensors due to tight space down there. It looks a bit tight in the DL, so I'm wondering if I use a full size/deep oxygen socket for my 1980 DL?

I can buy the following brands: Bosch; Denso; NTK (not NGK); Walker. Amazon claims that Denso AND Bosch are the OEM suppliers for Volvo. Any recommendations?

Am I correct that this car has only one oxygen sensor?

Finally, is there a correct torque that I should tighten the oxygen sensor?

Thanks!

If your 1980 has an original exhaust manifold as mine does - the O2 sensor screws into the manifold pointing almost directly back to the firewall. You should have no trouble using any wrench or socket. Personally I would use a boxed end wrench to crack it loose so you can keep your hands away from sharp objects on the firewall. Single wire O2 sensors are cheap so there no reason not to use Bosch. I've never torqued one -- make it reasonably tight. -- Dave

Yes, on the 1980 it is a relatively easy and straightforward job. I have used either 22mm or 7/8" box end wrenches, slipping them over the wire after it has been disconnected. Deep offset types provide a bit better clearance from the firewall. Also, when installing the new one, don't forget to use as small amount of anti-size on the new sensor threads. Be careful to NOT get the anti-seize on the sensor portion.

In my experience the slotted O2 sensor sockets aren't very useful. The one I had flexed and spread open when trying to remove the old. Ended up using an end wrench of remove the old (and subsequently install the new). That was on my Mini though. I don't recall ever replacing one on a 240.

The across-flats dimension limits of a 7/8" socket is only 0.0085"-0.0082" larger than a 22mm so using the "inch" equivalent shouldn't be issue.

Your 1980 will have only one sensor, probably just a single wire, cheap as they come.
