Bosch 0280160294 vs Spectra SP1252

Hello all. I am currently rebuilding the fuel delivery system on my 1974 145 and need a replacement in line fuel pump. The Bosch 0280160294 is extremely hard to find and expensive if you do. I was thinking about using a Spectra 1252 as a replacement. Does anyone have any experience doing this? Seems like it would work. Any advice or pointers gratefully received. Warren

my experience with the replacement fuel pumps is bad. bosch only. they will not maintain pressure and that's what kjet relies on. i've not seen spectra, but airtex and carter i have seen on cars that failed within a year or so of installing-not by me. even the lower pressure lh cars, i've seen problems with airtex. me, kjet, bosch only-gotta be. good luck, chuck.

      Peace of mind pump 140-160

Yes, Chuck, I think about what you've written every time I take my '79 k-jet fueled 244 Volvo on a 2000 mile trip. You're not the only one with lousy experience with an aftermarket main pump for k-jet.

I believe my car originally had a -996 Bosch pump in it, but when it died, thankfully only a few miles from home, I discovered the PO had replaced it with an Airtex. 15 years before. I saw what made it break, and knew a Bosch would not have incurred the same fault, but -- no Bosch available. Replaced it with another Airtex. That was 5 years ago.

Four years ago I posted the story showing what happened with the Airtex pump in another thread you were in, so I figure you saw it.

I suppose I should carry a spare, but in some ways I lack common sense. The spare tire is 40 years old.

My mistake.I am rebuilding the whole fuel system and cutting and pasting like a demon. The part number for the fuel pump is 0580254996. As you well know, these pumps are rare and expensive so I was thinking of swapping it out.

      Bosch Bosch 0580254996: You have D-Jetronic or K-Jetronic Injection? 140-160 1974

I figured Eric Planetman or Ron Kwas would provide guidance.

So, in 1974, Bosch K-Jetronic CIS continuous injection was first fitted to 140.

Though I suspect you have Bosch D-Jetronic.

I asked the 164 and seveeral 140-142-144-145 facebook groups and the results are inconclusive.

Please indicate what injection system your 1974 145 has. The fuel pumps are different.

Did you read the part number from the maker's mark on the Bosch pump body or from research.

      Hi marmiteman,

Bosch PN 0580254996 appears rather pricey for new (unused) old stock.

I see it for nearly $500 on Amazon.

      https://www.amazon.com/Bosch-0580254996-Electric-Fuel-Pump/dp/B000CEZQ6W

I guess Bosch provides no interchange or a generic option that provide flow, pressure, and I dunno what other features you need for your Bosch D-Jetronic 1974 Volvo 145.

      http://www.lucasinjection.com/bosch_and_lucas_fuel_pumps.htm

The Lucas Injection does not feature your pump Bosch PN. Also, indeed, new old stock may not enjoy the ethanol in most auto fuel blends.

Modern Bosch pumps, and after market, do accommodate ethanol and other additives.

If there is a reference someplace of your pump Bosch PN 0580254996 pump spec, and a suitable Bosch or aftermarket will suit it., maybe you'll have other solutions? Have you tried the dealership for a Volvo PN and spec information?

Else, while we would have a Bosch preference, maybe Chuck and Art's discussion helps.

Maybe by Sat-Your-Day or so I'll see what I can turn up using your Bosch PN. I'll see what shows up on the Volvo PN schema. I'll bet at least one pump is listed, and it is NLA.

I'm unsure what auto part vendor options you have in Halifax. Yet maybe try your nearby Volvo dealership.

Also, close to you in Rhode Island, US is Tasca and their Volvo Parts page. Not far from you.

I'll let you know if I find anything.

I'd also put a new tire or space saver spare donut on that 40-year rim. In the event you need to use it.

      Thanks.

      Duffed.

Thanks for all the useful information. I will run the gauntlet of the dealership parts department today and see if I can find some specs on the original pump. I am resigned to the fact that I will probably have to use an after market pump, but it would be useful to try and match the specs of the original as closely as possible. Please let me know if you discover anything else this weekend. Warren

I dunno how that happened. Me confusing your 145 with D-Jet and a 164. Sorry.

I'm asking 140 series groups on Bosch PN 0580254996 and Spectra 1252.

There may be other aftermarket options. I'll let you know any results.

          Hi Warren,

You and I probably know it is easy to compare a vendor's specifications; flow rate, working pressure, electrical input, temperature range, and even chemical resistance if offered. Fit, form, and function. The hard part is comparing longevity; how well it is made. Of course, that's why you came here. Anecdotes from experienced users of these parts.

May want to verify that Bosch part number. Unless you entered the part number incorrectly in your message.

Bosch PN 0280160294 is a vacuum actuated fuel pressure regulator for Bosch LH-Jetronic 2.4 / 3.1 on rear wheel drive non-turbo Volvo.

Though Eric Planetman, 142 Guy, B20Paul., and othes can help you.
