new shocks/struts HD springs -240 wagon 200

I just had Bilstein touring shocks/struts installed on my 280k mile 93 240 wagon as well as heavy duty springs in the rear. My mechanic told me the shocks and struts were shot and I assumed they must be as it seemed to be riding a bit lower, although it did not have any discernable difference in handling and ride. The prior shocks were Sachs Boge that were installed 100k miles earlier along with IPD’s anti-sway bar in the rear. The car has always had a smooth and supple ride with perfect tracking on the highway. I had read that the HD shocks were good for towing and heavier loads. I tow a 15 foot boat 400 miles in the summer and the rear end sagged a bit so I thought the heavier springs would help.

Upon installing the new shocks and springs the car rides like a buck board with a very busy ride, pitching forward to back and seems to be bottoming out hard right to the frame over the slightest road bump. It also is pulling to the right even with an alignment. Just after a 20 minute test ride on the highway I had a blasting headache and the onset of a stiff neck. I assume it’s due to the heavier spring but is there a possibility that there’s a break in period where they will soften up (?). Should I also have put in new springs in the front? Could the Bilsteins also be that much stiffer as well?

FYI, your post states you put in touring shocks/struts, then refer to the HD shocks/struts... So you put in HDs?

Bilstein HD shocks/struts do have a stiffer ride, but good handling. They would be "stronger" for towing purposes. The overload springs would also keep the rear end up and be "stronger" for towing.

The later model 240s (91 on) have stiffer front springs stock.

I ran Bilstein HD shocks/struts and overload rear springs on my 91 245. The ride was stiff and I did feel more vibration of the road, but not bad. I drove very long distances with that setup with no real issues.

That said, if the car is actually bottoming out and pulling to one side it sounds like you have some other suspension problems. Was the suspension brought up to "stage 0" before you put in the Billy HDs, i.e. everything fixed to perfect running order BEFORE you upgraded? With 280k on the car... Are all the bushings replaced? Front suspension parts solid? Bearings? The alignment problem could be your front springs. It could be that with the new solid shocks/struts you are now feeling all the unfixed suspension problems.

The easiest mechanical test would be to swap out the overload rear springs and see how the car rides. But you are still left with the question of how good are the original stock springs at 280k miles.

Also, having only the larger IPD swaybar on the back could create a problem. You'd have a mismatched setup. The IPD bars are designed to go on as a pair. Usually, for a wagon you want a smaller bar on back and a larger bar on front. ???

Sorry, I meant that I put touring shocks and struts but HD coil springs in the rear. I'm sure all the rest of the suspension is not up to date as I've dealt with it as things have gone bad. I guess I'll have to buy new regular springs as the old ones were pretty corroded. I don't recall if I put front/rear pair of sway bars, will have to look again. If that doesn't work I'll be dumping it quick as I can't afford to keep it up and definitely can't drive it the way it is. Thanks very much for your insight.

what have you done, if anything to all of your bushings, both front and rear?

That may account for some of the handling as well.

    definitely the overload springs!

I put them in my 89' back in 2006, and they still are as hard as the day I put them in.

I too put Bilstien's in this car but the were the heavy duty shocks and struts.

I have heavy duty shocks in my 91' and it rides great, not even close to what the 89' is like.

I will never, ever put those things in again. When I have time, I may pull the overload springs out and replace them with the regular springs.

    Worst purchase ever.

    Matt

Probably the HD Springs. Heard this before. Doubt it is the Bilstein Tourings. They may be the best all-around shock for a 240. And other Volvo models as well...:)
