FYI, your post states you put in touring shocks/struts, then refer to the HD shocks/struts... So you put in HDs?
Bilstein HD shocks/struts do have a stiffer ride, but good handling. They would be "stronger" for towing purposes. The overload springs would also keep the rear end up and be "stronger" for towing.
The later model 240s (91 on) have stiffer front springs stock.
I ran Bilstein HD shocks/struts and overload rear springs on my 91 245. The ride was stiff and I did feel more vibration of the road, but not bad. I drove very long distances with that setup with no real issues.
That said, if the car is actually bottoming out and pulling to one side it sounds like you have some other suspension problems. Was the suspension brought up to "stage 0" before you put in the Billy HDs, i.e. everything fixed to perfect running order BEFORE you upgraded? With 280k on the car... Are all the bushings replaced? Front suspension parts solid? Bearings? The alignment problem could be your front springs. It could be that with the new solid shocks/struts you are now feeling all the unfixed suspension problems.
The easiest mechanical test would be to swap out the overload rear springs and see how the car rides. But you are still left with the question of how good are the original stock springs at 280k miles.
Also, having only the larger IPD swaybar on the back could create a problem. You'd have a mismatched setup. The IPD bars are designed to go on as a pair. Usually, for a wagon you want a smaller bar on back and a larger bar on front. ???
