No start issue. 200 1986

Hi guys and gals.
1986 240 not started for five years.
Installed new battery and she started eventually.
Not ran much because she needed a deep cleaning.
Realized that fuel tank had rusted including sending unit.
Yesterday i replaced fuel tank, intank sending unit & pump, and fuel filter.
With new fuel she started right away but then died a minute later.
Will not restart.
Today i replaced the rotor & dist. cap with new.
Fuel is getting to rail.
Power at injectors (tested with multimeter).
Spark at plugs.
When I quickly click the key the engine sounds like it is going to start. If i turn & hold the key the sound is less convincing.
Both pumps are running (tested by jumping fuses).
Engine harness seems to be the upgraded version, no exposed wires or chipping insulation.
Will not start.

Hi,

Maybe the timing belt whispered “Good Bye.”

Have you check it, because after sitting for five years, it may have rotted?

Good question.
I checked under the oil cap, took a picture, clicked the key, compared picture and things had moved.
Thanks for thinking.

Hi,

That’s nice that the cam is moving but is it time with the crankshaft and distributor?

I would rotate the engine with a wrench down on the crankshaft and bring it up on zero, Turning it to the right.
Take a glance at the rotors position to align with the notch and number one wire terminal.
Take another glance into the top of the engine and see if lobes of the number one cylinder are centered pointing upwards equally.
Of course, there is a notch on the cam sprocket that can be seen by just peeling the top cover back a wee bit.

If all looks to be “in time,” I still would loosen the belt tensioner, through the rubber plugged hole in the front cover, just for the giggles of it, for nothing else to do?
You might have a “floppy-de-goes-somewhere soon” item in there.

You have fire and fuel and so the air should be a given.
The compression of it all throughly is what made me think into camshaft belt not working.

Hi Phil ~
She is running.
Turned out being fouled up fuel injectors.
After sitting for five years they can dry up whatever buildup was in them. The rusted tank

Hi,

Nice to hear back from you on this issue.

Apparently having the smell of fuel and not the proper atomization of really was kicking your buns.
It is amazing, most of the time, how a sitting piece of machinery can go south on you.
Sounds like the gas tank was neglected and turned into a trash tank!

Glad to hear you got it running.

Phil
