Bearing noise coming from transmission... 200 1989

All,

So a couple of weeks ago I'm changing my front pads and rotor on my tank, and in my haste to get the job done, I backed my car off of its front jack stands onto the front tires which I always store under the car out of way as an extra safety precaution is case the cars were to fall on me while I'm under it.

Any ways, I recover from this embarrassment only to now have the car making this awful noise coming from the transmission. Its an M47.

Prior to this incident, the car only had a slight whine in 5th gear. Now I have a very noticeable whine while accelerating in 1, 2, and 3. I have nothing in 4th as its the main drive gear, and then a slight whine in 5 at highway speeds.

While the car is idling, and in in neutral, and I let the clutch out I can hear this noticeable bearing noise that stops when I push the clutch back in, and then it goes away.

I still need to do more investigation on this noise as I haven't had the time up until now, but my question is this: How do I differentiate between a bad throw out bearing and a input shaft bearing going bad, and how does backing a car off of jack stands cause something like this to happen?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

when the pedal is down, the t/o bearing will be under load and make noise. when the pedal is up and in neutral, the input shaft of the trans in spinning, hencec the noise. sounds like a trans to me. as to why? got nothing except old age, no fluid changes and a bad coincidence. good luck, chuck.

Not the diagnosis I wanted to hear, but expected it!

Ugh!

Thanks,
