Hall sensor test 700 1989

Help!

I need some guidance re hall sensor testing. I’m attempting to do the “full hall sensor test” as laid out in the FAQs, but I’m finding myself confused as to which “above the brake pedal” connector is the one referred to in the instructions. The voltage at the distributor connection all checks out, but now I’m stymied.

Problem solved. After performing John Sargent’s hall sensor test described below (it failed), I went ahead and ordered a new distributer, put it in and now it’s back to spinning like a top. Thanks to everyone for their input!

Have you inspected the plastic connector for the hall sensor at the base of the distributor? Know issues plastic breaking cracking and wire shorts out against the distributor.

Everything looks clean and sound back there on the wire/ connector side. I’ll have to break out the inspection mirror to check the connector on the distributer.

I have parts, and complete Hall effect distributors.

A simple test is to remove the distributor, leaving it plugged in to the Hall effect three wire connector. Ground the coil lead, turn the key on, and spin the distributor. You should hear the injectors clicking.

Do you mean ground the main wire from coil to distributer cap?

Yes, ground the coil wire so you don't get lit up.

I would leave the cap off if you use my test.

              Thanks John.
I'm using your test. Distributer's out, coil's grounded, ignition is on and the injectors don't make a peep when I spin it. Is this a dead giveaway that the hall sensor has failed, or is there some other culprit I should look at first?

Nothing else to fail which I have encountered. How does the wiring harness to the Hall sensor look?

I have at least four Hall effect distributors in my stock of parts, and we no longer have cars which use them. Some have new shaft seals and all have good wiring connectors. If you want one to test with, please contact me. Just pay for shipping. If you need to keep it, I'll make you a bargain. For this purpose, my email address is my name at outlook.com.
