Hi,
KlausC asked or presumed that it might be silicone shut, but you said, after removing the gear box it should move back! So, I will also believe it is in the forward position.
I have one of those in my 1991 too! Luckily it still works.
I believe it’s not necessary to seal the rim on these as they are designed to allow water to seep in through the non-rubber dust and air seal.
This is Ok as there is are drain troughs along the sides that lead over to four hoses.
Two run down the A pillars and I believe the other two go down the B pillars.
I have not researched this so I’m winging this part!
The two vinyl hoses, that you see near the back of the trunk, drain the rear window area under those vents.
When you operate the crank for the sun roof the panel drops down in the back first before it starts to move rearwards.
So you will have to be helping it go down as you work that panel backwards. This might be held up slightly by an notched cam that the cable rotates out or down as it is pulled?
How to access it I don’t know but someone else might!
As it moves back there is a flat spring loaded, flip panel in the front that goes up. It is a wind deflector and shouldn’t interfere with the sliding action going back. It pops in a couple inches.
All this might be a little hard to to push or to pry by the fingers so, I would suggest using a large diameter suction cup with a handle. Put it flat down in the center of the panel to get the leverage back and enough force to edge it down.
Again, I have never torn one of these apart and hope I never have too!
I suspect it might be built like an electric radio antenna and the cable might be made of nylon with teeth. Again, This is only a guess!
I recently replaced one of those similar cables in my 1993 antenna. It has a notched nylon belt that broke into about 17 tiny pieces. Each piece ranged in size of a few teeth to about four inches long. It literally jammed up everything when I tried to “easily” run a new belt down in there, according to the “sales” instructions.
I ended up disassembling the entire unit to find ever one of those short suckers!
After seeing how it operates and how quickly with the power is being switched on and off by the ignition switch rolling over to start, I said to myself, “that hard on the belt getting snatched back and forth especially after it gets old and brittle!”
I then built myself a delay relay-on by using a delay-relay off setup. I used a courtesy light delay off relay snagged from a 1985-86-on of the 240 series.
After I turn off the car or the radio it takes about fifteen seconds for the antenna to drop. But when starting the car up the delay is still long enough that the courtesy relay holds the power on for a few seconds too. It heats up quickly but is slow to cool.
I also made up another relay/diode setup to operate my electric windows. I can open any door on the car and the door switches work. It also uses the courtesy relay feature under the dash!
This works when the car switch is off or has no keys! It stops me from cussing the ignition switch or darn thieves in general!
Also Good deal when washing the car or windows as it’s like the old manual windows that will work when you want them without those darn keys in the switch. Getting in there to turn the switch on to the second position sucked. All this got changed to the first click on my 1992 and 1993 also!
If I leave the dogs in the car I roll my windows down quite a bit and lock the doors.
I also use the the trunk lock feature, on 1989- up?
This is done by turning the key slot sides ways to the left. This way no one can enter the trunk even if they reach through the windows and pull up the lock knobs.
If the dogs step on the switches nothing works because the doors are shut.
So! Welcome to the 1991, because everything, is either fixable or can be modified!
By the way, I was told by an “Indy” that the sun roof feature was only available on the 1991 as a special order car that year.
There might be a limited number of them!
My paint is a dark metallic gray. Supposedly ordered?
Whether it’s true or not I don’t know?
For $200, that’s almost a criminal act, nowadays, for anything running or not!
The Picknpull thieves are hating you right now because they missed it!
