new engine mounts and header exhaust egr valve? 1800 1972

Good morning all,

Getting some maintenance done on my '72 P1800 ES; and a couple of questions came up:
1. Installed new engine and transmission mounts (manual Tran); Transmission mount is fine; new engine mounts (supplied for this vehicle) raised engine a bit.. so fan hits fan shroud.. ouch.. is this common? modify the shroud?

2. Replaced exhaust system on this car, including header exhaust pipe. Seems there was a hole in old pipe for egr valve? new pipe lacks hole; again, common? cap off lead? ( I think an earlier owner swapped auto transmission with the current manual.)

    Are you sure you got 1800 mounts? On the 140, it is not uncommon to get 164 engine mounts because they are a little more durable. Clearance is not an issue on the 140, might be a problem on the 1800 if they supplied 164 mounts. Do the mounts have a large hexagonal plate on one side? If so, those would be 164 mounts.

    Are you absolutely sure that the transmission mount has not compressed? Fresh engine mounts and a compressed transmission mount will tilt the engine up at the front leading to a potential fan / shroud contact. If you want to try modifying the shroud, try repositioning it rather than hacking it up. Increases in the clearance between the tip of the blades and the shroud lead to reduced effectiveness.

    I didn't think that Volvo started using EGR until some point in the 240 series. I don't recall ever seeing an EGR arrangement in the up to 1972 140 parts manuals (maybe post 72?). 1972 Volvo cars for California had a different version number and only came with automatics. Perhaps the California version had EGR?

      My '73 1800ES had a rinky-dink EGR system as original equipment. It was totally fried so I removed it and capped off both the manifold and intake plenum.

      As for the fan/shroud contact, 142 guy may be on the right track with his concern about the trans mount - if the tail shaft sits too low, the fan will sit too high with the front mounts being the fulcrum. You say your car was likely converted from BW35 to M41. I went through that conversion and learned a thing or two in the process. Mainly, the trans mount bracket is different between the BW35 and the M41. They may not have used the correct one.



      Also look at the trans mount and cross member and make sure a previous owner didn't do some weird shimming in order to "make things work".

      You might also measure the front mounts' compressed height and post here so others can tell you how it compares to theirs.

        EGR was introduced on Volvos in 1973, but only for automatics and that includes the 1800ES.

        EGR was installed on all 1974 and 1975 B20's and B30's with both automatic and manual transmissions.

        What's your VIN? You might actually have a 1973 1800ES.
