air filter housing 1800

I removed the wing nut but the cover will not budge. Parts diagram does not show a washer, just the nut. Tried lock-ease on the wing nut stud and around the seam. Does not appear rusted at all.

Was able to insert a thin blade and run along the seam on the right side, can not reach the left.

Tried reefing on the cover and heard a metalic crack - perhaps part of the rear portion attachment flange.

Even if I could get the entire filter assempbly loose I doubt it could be withdrawn throught the grille opening.

Comments sought - Thanks!

Don't take this wrong, but you may know what year, model, and version of 1800 your talking about, but we don't unless you state this (it's also not noted on your profile)...so please give additional pertinent info!
Also, what is reefing? Try to use standard terms and descriptions meaningful to speakers of various dialects.

    Cheers

      air filter housing 1800 - 1973 1800

Oops - forgot year, definately needed as '69 and earlier I believe are different - 1973

Reefing = to pull, verb: dictionary.com, old term, sorry, am an old owner

Unit sits behind the rad. grille. Front is suppposed to pop off after removing the nut. Rear portion extends into the engine bay - am sure no way to extract whole.

        Update

Was hoping I was missing something but seems not. I suspect the rubber on the element has fused.

By attathing a tube to my bottle of Liquid Wrench I have applied to the entire seam.

I also used a long feeler gauge and ran it along the seam.

Will try tomorrow after letting the LW soak overnight.

Got it...the rubber seal is likely sticky and "sealing" the two surfaces together by adhesion...LW may help, but the rubber will tend to seal it out and keep it from getting to where it needs to to release the two...try some gentle tappy-tappy to encourage loosening...at reassembly time, a film of silicon in the gasket will prevent such good adhesion and recurrence.

          Good Hunting!
