AW-70 transmission removal, 1989+ 240 with LH 2.4 200 1989

I've recently removed and re-installed the automatic transmission from three 240s with LH 2.4. LH 2.4 uses a tone ring for ignition timing. The tone ring protrudes from the drive plate, and the transmission is very difficult to get out, and re-install over the tone ring. I found that removing the four crossmember bolts, and letting the crossmember and engine assembly hang in the car allowed the transmission to be easily removed and re-installed.

AW-70 transmission removal, 1989+ 240 with EZ116K 200 1989

Nice idea! I cringe to hang the weight forcing the head into the firewall depending on the condition of the motor mounts, so chained it up some, which like you say doesn't leave much room for manipulating the bell housing back over it all under the tunnel. Transmission jack helps a lot with that.

AW-70 transmission removal, 1989+ 240 with EZ116K 200 1989

Nice photos. I was too busy to take them on Saturday, when I did both 240 and 940 AW-7X removal and replacement. The first 240 LH 2.4 transmission r and r I did, I left the front crossmember in place. It was tough reinstalling the transmission. I had to jack the engine sideways with a compact hydraulic jack, and I was concerned about damaging the tone ring. The second the third 240 transmissions which I removed, I lowered the crossmember.

With a helper, it was less than three hours to r and r the AW-70 on Saturday. Since I had all the tools out, I then r and r'ed the transmission in the 940T. I was tired that night. The 940 transmission was worn out at 325,xxx miles.
