need 940 sunroof or drive cable 900

You good folks are my last resort ... I found a broken drive cable in my 940 sunroof, and nobody on line has one in stock, #3526114 Right.

If I could find a complete used sunroof, I'd go that route.

Anybody have either the cable or a sunroof kicking around?

Dear cyclopsga,

Hope you're well. The part (#3526114) seems still to be available. A Volvo dealer should be able to order one, from Volvo USA. Worst case, the part will have to be shipped from Sweden (or elsewhere). MSRP is about $58 at a U.S. Volvo dealer.

This is a "dealer only" part, i.e., the usual suppliers (e.g., www.fcpgroton.com) won't inventory it. Thus, you might want to contact Tasca Volvo (www.tascavolvo.com) or Borton Volvo (www.bortonvolvo.com). Both are reliable suppliers.

I'd replace both drive cables. If one failed, the other is likely to do so. Accessing these items isn't easy, so it is best to do both.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Spook -

Thanks for the reply.

Tasca says the #114 cable is available, at $50+, but the #113 cable is not. Shipping would be 5-7 weeks from Sweden.

I did manage to find a used Volvo parts house in Atlanta, Voluparts, who disassembles sunroofs and has both cables for $25 each. I'm going to try that.

I may replace both cables, or at least the #114 right-hand cable, depending on how difficult the project is.

FYI, if ever needed in future, there’s another used Volvo parts house a stones throw from Voluparts. It’s called Auto Disassembly Volvo on Chattahoochee St.

Dear cyclopsga,

Hope you're well. At $25 for both cables, I'd buy a spare set.

Rust and friction (rubbing) are the enemies of stranded steel cables. To extend these cables' service life, I'd coat each cable with the grease used on garage door parts.

This grease - usually sold in aerosol cans - comes out as a spray (and so penetrates) and then congeals. Grease that penetrates prevents rust. This grease also reduces wear. The grease coats the steel strands - that comprise each cable - reducing direct steel-to-steel contact and so wear.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

To clarify Spook's comments, the sunroof drive cable is a "worm gear" cable, steel wrapped in a spiral pattern around a central core.

In my case, the central steel cable had pulled out of the end fitting that connects the cable to the sunroof gate (tilt). The outside spiral wrapping was intact, but dry.
I greased the new cable liberally with high-temp grease as I slid it into the side rail and guide tube.
