Car Cover 900

I'm thinking of getting a cover for my 945.

I don't drive it that much... Chores once in awhile and out of town road trips.

Maybe a cover would help protect the paint, etc...

But then I've heard that a cover would promote humidity. ??? But then there are modern breathing materials.

Anybody have any experience with a cover?

I use a moderately priced cover fro PEP Boys. They are blue with a plastic coating on both sides and perforated.

They shed water in light rains, soaking through some in heavy, long rains.

I live in Massachusetts and drying the cover usually only takes 6-8 hours.

I had a 745 and a 245 under covers for 2 years and they came out clean - I put a pool float inside the roof rack. I have pollen

, flowers from maple and oak trees, and plenty of dust.

These covers seem to shed dirt, and I have tried 4 or 5 others with less success.

I use three fitted rope ties - a loop on each end of the rope and a bungee cord to keep tension.

One rope in front of the front wheels, one behind the rear wheels and one in the middle, through the grommets in the cover.

On my 544, the rear rope has to be in front of the rear wheels and down the rear slope.

For long term storage, I cut a blue tarp to just fit over the sides of the car and place the cover over that.

The 544 cover is too long, so I fit the cover front and rear and make a fold on the roof under the center rope.

Dear MrNabisco,

Hope you're well. Car covers, at sub-freezing temperatures will - if wet - adhere to the surface. I gave-up on car covers in favor of a coating of a good quality carnauba wax.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Mr. N

Got a nice Noah car cover for our 2007 V70 that we rarely use. Works great and dries out pretty quick but is susceptible to squirrels during nesting season as they have razor sharp claws and have found the material attractive. In addition, Chipmunks will take an interest in an unused car. Use lots of moth balls in strategic locations. My two year old cover has scores of patches.

Ditto on moth balls. Desiccant in the interior helps with moisture/mildew prevention. Plug the tail pipes and air intake systems to prevent little critters from finding a way in. And be sure the HVAC is positioned in the max air/recirculate position so the outside air vent is closed - again, critter prevention.

Tons of experience.

Car covers are pretty good at two things --- keeping the SUN and dry debris off the car. That's what they excel at. If the car sits outside and it rains/snows/mists/fogs (so the cover/car gets wet) then they are more trouble than they're worth. Trapping moisture between the cover and the paint and then having the cover dry on the car is not a good thing. I spent most of my pre-garage years trying to anticipate the rain so I could get the cover OFF the car. Once the cover's wet, trying to get it dry off the car is a royal pain. They can hold a TON of water. And letting it dry on the car isn't good for the car.

So -- my 2 cents -- if the car sits under a carport or in a garage then a cover is a great way to keep UV out and protect against cats, dust, etc. If you live in a part of the country where 330 days of the year all you're worried about is sun -- they're great. Otherwise, they're one helluva lot of work.

Opinions vary. I'm sure you'll get others. I'm grateful to have 4 garage stalls where the cars can be kept completely out of the weather and sun when they're home.

Thanks for the response.

Trapped moisture is exactly what I'm concerned about. We get plenty of rain and snow here in NYC.

I was hoping some new fancy wicking material cover might work...

My life would be very different if I had a garage to park and work in.
