coil issue 1800 1967

Hi All

I have a 67 1800 which i fitted a Crane XR700 ign module to ( with IPD diode )

I have done about 500 miles since rebuild

I then had a problem where the oil exited the engine with subsequent over heat

New head gasket fitted and since then the engine turns over with no start

A lot of engine cranking was done

I pulled a spark plug out and rested it on the rocker cover and checked for spark which appeared to be very weak and possibly intermittent

I pulled the high tension lead to the distributor and noticed a weak spark from it

Thinking i held it too far from the rocker cover i reduced the gap to 1/8" and no spark is evident at all

The light on the Crane module lights as it should (on and off with messages from the dist )

I am guessing the coil

Could you please enlighten me of a test procedure and if i were to fit a blue Bosch coil, the wiring i would need to do

I am guessing i would not need the IPD diode

How should i ascertain if the ign switch is faulty

Thanks for any advice offered

Davids

Thanks all

I have been given an Echlin GX80 high performance coil which reads 4.0 ohms and 11500 ohms

I notice others fit the blue bosch coil ( 3ohms )

Is the Echlin at 4ohms too high or is this a good thing with respect to my Crane unit

David

Well
I just went to my chariot to test the HT lead and when i pulled the lead from the coil which the painter had sprayed the colour of the car????
i noticed a black stain from the neg terminal to the 12 oclock of the coil
I know that was not there before and on closer inspection there is a crack leading from that terminal to the top of the coil

Looking closer there is thick black hardened tar like substance that has oozed out from where the coil is attached to the body

I think i have my answer

In fitting a new coil i assume my tach wire still runs from the neg terminal of the new coil

Am i on the right path

Cheers

David;

If you are getting spark, Ign Coil is probably OK...

Diode wire is necessary to assure elec ign is powered during cranking (if elec ign module is powered from terminal 54, and you are still cranking with ign key). See: http://www.sw-em.com/Volvo%20Ignition%20from%20Scratch.htm#Vintage%20Volvo%20Ignition%20system%20and%20the%20Armored%20Cable

Good Hunting
