Hi everyone. Just replaced the fuel pump on this 1800 with a rebuilt from Calif. It failed within five minutes. It runs, but doesn't pump. It's the original type with three nipples. Previously we installed a later 240 style pump, which did well until the fuel got hot, then it couldn't suck the fuel from the tank. Now we don't have working pump. Does anyone have any suggestions? Please respond to my e mail at fat37ply@nc.rr.com in Raleigh, N.C. Thanks! (May 10, 2018)

No joke, there are some places that think they can rebuild those old Bosch electric fuel pumps and they get a lot of money for trying.
One of my suppliers used to offer Python rebuilt Bosch D-jet fuel pumps, so I tried one when a customer needed a pump. The 1st 1 didn't work at, the 2nd 1 worked, but leaked fuel out of the electrical connector. Finally, the 3rd 1 worked and didn't leak. I don't remember having to replace the working 1, but I also don't remember which customer either.
FYI, I have NOS original Bosch D-jet fuel pumps for sale.

Quite often, the roll pin has sheared due to missing or non exsistant strainers, an easy fix.
If it's leaking at the electric end, it's junk. You get to keep the O-Ring & rollers as spares.

PS;
Are you certain its the fuel temp which is the issue...?...I rather doubt it...injected 1800s had fuel tank rust issues...where Fuel Filter gets blocked by rust particles...I recommend you remove Filter, and inspect what it has filtered out...
Also, Fuel temp should not (can not!) be an issue as D-Jet Fuel Press Reg is a dump type where unused fuel is circulated bank to tank...assure this path is flowing all the time, effectively circulating fuel constantly (and cooling it in the long path with high surface area)...FPRs fail and this constant circulation/cooling stops...

What cooling?
Low tank on a hot day in any D-Jet car can cause problems that can be quickly fixed with a refill at the gas station. 74 K-Jet was worse, that's why the low pressure intank pump was added.

Ron, are you referring to the pick-up screen in the tank or the filter just downstream from the pump. Personally, I was thinking the pick-up screen may be clogged and starving the pump.

Chris;
Both!...although I seem to recall not all models/years have an in-tank prescreen on the pickup like my 73ES (a check on GCP site with chassis number should answer that...may its just the injected ones that have the prescreen)...in my case, pickup screen on pickup in tank was clogged to the extent that it completely starved the Pump...after numerous clearings of rust flakes from that screen,it got better, but numerous cleanings of the external Filter were also required...
Cheers

The screen on my 73ES also clogged up and starved the pump. I blew air backwards through the line and was able to blow enough crud out of the screen to get good fuel flow again - but I wonder how long that will last before it clogs again.
I don't see any way to extract the screen without cutting the tank open. Can you tie a fish wire to the external hose fitting, unscrew a jam nut and then shake the screen assembly out through the float access? (I don't recall if there even is a jam nut on the hose fitting.)

Chris;
My ES Tank has a depression with a threaded fastener/sump right below the PreScreen...separate from the Drain Plug IIRC...the fastener was a large internal hex, which when loosened, allowed access to the PS just above, which was handy and a pretty good design(!)...Tank obviously needs to be drained first, but access to PS was good, and it was possible to clean PS and what fell off the PS into the sump...look on the bottom of your Tank for this and post back...IIRC not all tanks were configured like that, or there were some variations...
Good Hunting!

All I have on the bottom of the tank is a plug about 3/8” diameter with a square head. It gas a pretty fine thread from what I see exposed.

1970 and 1971 1800E gas tanks do NOT have an intank fuel filter and 1972 and later do have an intank fuel filter.

Yuck! No strainer in front of the injection pump would really kill the life of the pump.

Maybe someone put an older tank in my 73. It was in a bit of a rear ender at some point in its life.
