'69 144s gas Tank removal 140-160

Need to remove this tank as it looks like someone put the floor jack under the drain bung instead of the read end pumpkin. Plus the car is sitting now many years so a thorough inspections, etc. is needed.

But just how do you free the tank from the seam sealer all around the flange?

I suggest spraying some kerosine around the sealed area, not really dripping, but quite wet, do it a couple of times a day apart - that might soften the sealant and even make its easier to clean the old suff off.

Thanks, James. Actually it came out with little up-force (floor jack) from below. Some soft grey sealant was present and this removed with a plastic scraper and acetone for the residue.

Oh, I also found out who the jerk was who dented the tank by lifting the car by putting the jack under it....

When you are ready, don't forget the sealant.

I buy a M-D product from Lowes that looks identical to the original and I use it on all of the early gas tanks and heater boxes.

The same stuff is used on the body in all kinds of places as dum dum.

And best of all it costs under $10.00.

I'd be interested to know what that sealant item is. I was going to buy the Strip Caulk from Eastwood at around $17, but I will never find use for the 94 feet of it as they sell it.

What I found in the car when I removed the tank didn't look like something special. Just some soft, grey putty of sorts.

Neither glue nor seam sealer. It was flexible though

You remove the gas tank through the trunk.

Drain the tank.

Remove all mounting screws and fuel lines and all fittings that screw into the gas tank except the drain plug.

Using a floor jack and a piece of plywood to protect the bottom of the tank, slowly put pressure on the drivers side of the tank to break the grip of the sealant.

Make sure you aren't pushing on the drain plug.

FYI, I have a recommended replacement sealant.

Ha Ha Ha....

"Make sure you aren't pushing on the drain plug."

That's half the reason I am removing the tank....Somebody beat me to the damage

Thanks. Simple solution that completely escaped me
