Door keys questions 444-544 1962

My 544 came with no door / trunk key. I know I could buy a set of new lock cylinders with keys, but I prefer to use what is there on the car, whenever it makes sense.
Can a locksmith work backwards from the existing locks on the car to create new keys? If so, is it expensive to do that?
Does anyone know if there is a common key blank available for the PV door locks? Is it available in the US or any sources?

    Door keys questions 444-544 1962

    I believe Ron is correct in that a "Union" brand key came from the factory. Not sure if those are available anymore.

    FWIW, I was able to use "Taylor 65V" blanks for both the ignition and door/trunk locks on my 1960 PV544.
    Though the same blank was used, the door/trunk key was cut slightly shorter than the ignition key.

    Good luck. I had these keys made over 30 years ago.

      Al;

      Taylor is a second-source supplier of replacement keys.

      The fact that you were able to use one key for both Ign and Doors is either a lucky coincidence, but more likely result of someone modifying things for this to be possible...I don't believe that was the case OE for 544 or 122 vehicles...444?...maybe Eric has info on these)...but it makes the case that these door LCs were never the highest security locks in the first place (60's Sweden...crime, what crime?)...Ign LC on the other hand, in combination with armored Ign Coil power cable gave pretty good security IMO!

      Cheers

        Door keys questions 444-544 1962

        Wow thanks everyone for some great first-hand experience with this problem!
        There is an old locksmith shop in town that I think might be able to do it - at least they have the “wall of keys” mentioned. I’m getting an ASSA blank ignition key to have a spare, and I will have that locksmith cut that for me, and at the same time see if I can get him to try to make a door key by impression. Maybe try to do a package deal.
        Thanks again!

          Door keys questions 444-544 1962

          Visited locksmith; he won’t mess with it on the car, so I gotta take out trunk cylinder and leave it with him one of these days.
          On the ignition, I asked about just a copy from my Silca copy, and of course no luck but then I mentioned they should be able to use a “Taylor 65V” and again no luck but they got digging and found that cross-references to an ILCO V61A blank, and that works, so at least I left with an extra ignition key for $5 out the door.
          Now I’ll work on getting the truck lock off and go back to see if they can have luck there.

            The door and trunk locks are easy to remove.
            IIRC, there is simply one screw that "locks" the lock cylinder in place. It just jams up against the body of the lock cylinder.

    Having Door Keys made when none come with car. 444-544 1962

    Phil;

    I'd call around to locksmiths to find one you can take the car to, to have a "Key made by Impression" technique...old-time locksmiths (lots of experience) who have a wall of keys (including hopefully the correct one, try "Union" key blanks), is required, these are available and hopefully on that wall.

    Second option is to remove Lock Cylinder (trunk is usually least difficult to access, and simplest), take this to locksmith for same work. Once KbI is made which operates Lock Cylinder satisfactorily, have them made a few copeis obviously...hopefully door locks haven't been changed, so this key(s) should work there also...

    Link to 122 key info (I believe many are the same as 544 so this applies, but 544 experts can/will please advise with details) info: http://www.sw-em.com/service%20notes.htm#Key_Blanks_doors_trunk

    Good Hunting!

      Having Door Keys made when none come with car. 444-544 1962

      I had a customer in the same situation with his 544 and I took the car to a locksmith and he was able to make a key.

      But shortly after, the drivers door tumbler broke as they are made of pot metal and I wound up replacing all 3 tumblers with a matching set.

      FYI, the keys for the outer door locks on a PV are different than the 122.

      However, the tumbler for the old drivers side door lock on my 122 was so badly worn, you could open it with just about any smaller key, including a 2 sided key.
