Crankshaft Pulley Removal - 242 1982 Volvo B21F Engine 200 1982

Hello!

My name is Rony. I have a 1982 242 Volvo - with a B21F engine. I need to replace the "timing belt". My problem is that I am having great difficulties removing the "crankshaft pulley" as the bolt turns with the whole assembly. Is there a tool especially for that operation; or what other techniques might be employed to hold the crankshaft in place? Thank you - Rony

See the late Bruce Young's description of the, "rope trick." He didn't invent it but he was a leading proponent.

It works in spite of what some people will tell you.

In the PickNPull, looking for spare crankshaft pulleys, I've found that rubber washer hose works fine.

Trev, I enjoyed reading that bit of impromptu genius. The PnP offers so many opportunities to do things twice as fast as you could at home, with half as much, especially as closing time nears. Been quite a while for me.

Regarding Bruce's rope trick advocacy, I had the pleasure of changing a leaking crank seal (79 244) on a road trip - in Bruce's garage. He lent me his 5" piece of heater hose to guide the rope into the plug hole. Excellent tip.

For other readers, I'd think it wouldn't need to be said, but don't use the washer hose at home on your own car because it might break off inside the cylinder. But I've learned over the years some will take internet advice out of context or without dose of common sense.

Art, are you saying now is NOT the right time to mention the "socket-with-breaker-bar-wedged-against-the-frame-rail-and-click-the-starter" method?

            Hi Chris,

Good illustration! If you read TB maint and non-perf forum, the evidence of this reliance on a smartphone for on-the-spot help is clear by the number of folks who destroy the key nub in the B230's crank sprocket. Sure they get the damper loose using the starter or jamming screwdrivers in the ring gear, but never much thinking about how to re-apply that torque to the bolt when the job is done.

    Hello Rony,

The easiest way is to use an air gun to remove and tighten the bolt, but that appears to not be an option.

A simple technique is with the transmission braced removed, have an assistant use a large screwdriver or pry bar wedged between the flywheel teeth and the engine block while you loosen and then tighten the crankshaft bolt.

        You are welcome.

FYI, I use this same technique when removing/installing the torque converter bolts on cars with automatic transmissions.
