Howdy gang..............can't wait for the Davis Show this weekend !

Can anybody think of a compelling reason to take my stock 15" rims and put a 14" rim with a bit beefier tire size? Somebody mentioned it as an option as I am looking to replace my tires and rims for my PV. I can't see a logical reason for it, but i'm not a tire expert either..........however I do know about rubbers...........ask my old girlfriends!

    I have a '64.

A couple of posters have said that larger wheels and tires have made their cars handle poorer.

Try eBay - I got nice hubcaps, trim rings and a set of station wagon wheels - I can feel that they are somewhat heavier and I think a bit wider than stock.

A few years ago Road & Track tested a BMW series 3 with +1, +2, and +3 wheels and tires (16, 17, and 18 inch)

The results - to their surprise, the original 15 inch wheels performed somewhat better than the larger sizes.

They talked to an engineer at BMW about their findings - He told them - Of course, you must realize that the car was designed for 15 inch wheels.

Their conclusion - owners attribute better performance to larger wheels, but actually the improvement comes from newer, high performance tires!

Todays trend is to larger wheels, lower profile tires.

How about classic tires with wide whitewalls?

See if you can find out what 544 rally cars wore.

All other things bring equal, a smaller wheel and a tire with a higher sidewall will give you a softer ride.

I mounted a 14" on my 544 years back and the edge of the rim rubbed the outer tie-rod end. was a mag wheel, so "lip" may have been different. Check out first.
My 2 cents worth...Ken in Sunny Fla.
