I have a 960-97 and it is in impeccable state, engine runs smooth and car goes well when warm. If engine/box cold, it takes a few minutes before its actually moving forward.
Oil level ok. It becamse alot worse after a car shop changed oil in the gear box. Anybody has ideas what to do please??

    Dear Joe Tanner,

    Hope you're well. According to the Volvo pocket data booklet: Cars, 700,900,S90, V90, 850, S/V/C70 (1991-1998), the correct automatic transmission fluid (ATF) for the Aisin-Warner 30/40 or 30/43 transmissions must meet specification Dexron IIE & Ford Mercon. (p. 17).

    I'd get 12 quarts of any ATF that meets this spec and flush the tranny. I'd then drive 1,000 miles and re-flush with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF, which I reasonably believe meets the Volvo specification, see: https://mobiloil.com/en/automatic-transmission-fluid/synthetic-atf .

    I'd guess that the car will run as smoothly as it did. Then, find another shop, wherein there are those, who read specifications and do accordingly.

    Synthetic ATF is another option. Mentioned in FAQ I believe. Worked well in my 850 tranny - 250k+ and still going on original tranny.

        My older Volvo's love the Valvoline Max transmission oil in the red container.

        If the other repair shop did not change the trans filter, I would do that along with the new oil.

    Find out what ATF fluid Volvo recommends for your tranny and switch to that. A tranny flush prior to the switch is highly recommended.
