Whistling 240- second post

Friends at the Brickboard:
I recently posted a question concerning a whistling noise that I get during the Winter from my '91 240 Sedan. It has done it for quite a number of years, and I've thought it must be a simple vacuum leak. But this Spring it has changed and is doing it at less cold temps as well. And it used to be a single whistle but is now more of a chord of several whistles. My original question said that it happens on acceleration, but when driving after my posting I've realized that it's actually on deceleration when I hear it most often. I've had one answer from a knowledgeable person suggesting that it's the drive line center support bearing going dry. Would others concur with that diagnosis?

Yes. Mine actually sounded a bit like a jet engine.. anyway my mechanic was able to get it on the lift and spray some Wurth grease into the bearing and it has been silent since.

Many thanks for this information. I was certain that the first person to respond knew what he was talking about, but it was the first time that I'd only had one response to a question. So I appreciate the second opinions to the correct diagnosis. I want to keep my 240 going for a long while, and you all aid the cause.

I did pretty much the same thing on my old 240. Pried the cover back and greased the bearing as well as I could. Yes, it worked!

I have had success along these lines as well.

While the bearings are "sealed" I have found that a dental pick can be used to get under and raise the lip of the plastic cover and the straw on an aerosol can of LPS3 can be slipped in to give it a good shot of spray grease.
