Volvo trans rear housing gasket 200 1986

Hi all,
I'm in process of replacing the rear main trans seal in my 86 240. So far not a bad job except getting the remaining gasket left on the trans itself. Have tried every solvent I can find. I'm trying to be careful and not mess up the aluminum. Toughest gasket I've ever dealt with.
Anyone have any tips on getting this off.
Thanks!
Joel

I used a razor blade and tons of PATIENCE. It takes time but you are correct in being concerned about nicking the aluminum.

You mention that you are replacing the seal. Keep in mind that the reason the seal goes bad is due to wear on the tailshaft bushing. Are you planning on replacing the bushing as well? You'd hate to have to do this job again.

I feel your pain. I know you said you tried them all but I have used Permatex Gasket Remover with success, but it still took a lot of work with a single edge razor blade.

Another problem is keeping all the grit that clings to the underside of the car from ending up on the clean area you have exposed.

      Hi Randy,
Thanks, I've tried everything. My son is out in the garage now with the Permatex foamy solution. You're right. It seems to work the best so far, tried CRC, you name it. That gasket may tougher than the 240!
      Thanks,
      Joel

3M makes a product called "Roloc Bristle Discs" and the white ones are safe for aluminum.
