Good compression, bad leakdown 900 1994

The vehicle is a 94 Volvo 940, Regina Fi. I’ve had a misfire at idle ever since I got this vehicle. Misfire is worse on a cold start, and it generally improves once vehicle warms. I haven’t had any coolant loss. There is no steam or smoke through the exhaust.  I haven’t had any oil loss between oil changes.

When I hook up a vacuum gauge, I get a steady pulsating between 17-20 at idle.  Vacuum rebounds at open throttle snap.  My dry compression tests are consistent—about 180lbs per cylinder. Wet compression tests are consistent as well—about 210lbs per cylinder.  

My leak down test results are what are confusing me. Cylinder 1, 3, and 4 I get about 10-12% loss. However, on cylinder 2 I get about 30% loss. There are no bubbles in the coolant reservoir, hear nothing through the intake, and nothing through the exhaust. I can only hear the air escaping through the oil filler.  I tested cylinder 2 a few times and I received consistent results. However, on a few tests, I had air blowing out of cylinder 1 sparkplug hole when testing cylinder 2.

My question is could this only be an intermittent head gasket issue since I sometimes have leakage into cylinder 1?  If the rings were bad, wouldn’t I have obvious symptoms: oil loss, much better results on the wet test,etc. I’m still a noob at this car stuff so any tips or experience shared is appreciated.

    An intake manifold gasket leak is something that can be worse when cold than when warm. Also more noticeable when idling than at higher RPM.

      Hi Chris

      I ruled out a vacuum leak. I borrowed my friend's smoke machine. The only area where I saw smoke escaping from the intake system is where the return spring attaches to the throttle body. I've tried spraying that area with carb cleaner and applying propane to that suspect area. However, it does not affect idle.

    a bad head gasket even between cylinders is not where i'd look to resolve a long standing misfire.

    a misfire is normally an electrical issue not something as obscure as inter cylinder leakage.

    i would be looking for a weak coil as a cause, perhaps a coil to distributor wire degradation or even poor plug wires, less than good distributor cap and cap

    since you mention no remedial repairs to fix this it is hard to know what you have done or not other than an elaborate compression test

    Check your valve clearances. I know for SURE that ALL the clearances gives another 0.5mm when engine is hot. If your clearances are at the borderline of touching the valves when engine is cold then they'll become better when hot.

    i.e. Standard clearances (all inlet/exhaust valves) are 0.40mm on cold engine which will become 0.45mm when hot. Yes you could set them on cold engine (much easier to work on too).

    I haven't heard of any cross-cylinder head gasket leaking so far for the B230 redblock engine.

      I had a cross cylinder failure on the 240 years ago, Car ran rough for a few days and eventually wouldn't start

      You will get cross cylinder head leaking if the head gasket is blown between cylinders!

      Ask me how I know!

      Here it is anyways.

      I helped a friend pull his head as the head gasket was leaking. Once we pulled it we saw that a piece of the head gasket was blown away between cylinder 2 & 3, and the upon measuring the head for flatness we saw that it was severely warped. In fact, it was so warped that we measured about 30 mils in the center of the head when measuring from the front of the head to the back. Completely worthless!

      So yes, it can happen.
