BW35 Shift Linkage Question 140-160

Had a little transmission work done yesterday. The shifter linkage bushings needed to be replaced, along with the neutral safety switch, which was actually leaking fluid. While the old parts where out, my mechanic could see that the threaded end of the remaining linkage rod was worn a bit and will cause a wobble and prevent the gear indicator from being exactly accurate. He said some linkage rods are made for left or right side drive and if this one was made that way, it would only need to be rotated 180 degrees and the problem will be solved. Do any of you know if the linkage rod has this 180 degree reversibility? It's inside the transmission and I don't want to pay for an exploratory to find out. Sorry for the long post. Thanks for your help.

    From the parts book, the shaft (part #235709) itself does appear to be reversible but as some internal parts rotate on it and are pinned to it that might not be the case. The ability to have the lever fitted to both sides is to accommodate both rhd and lhd cars. Wear in the squared off lever hole can be cured by welding and reshaping. A new nut with some loctite should keep it secure.

      Thanks for that advice. I'll think that's what I'll do. I heard from someone that there is something pinned to the other end. He also said there were two part numbers for that shaft. Are you seeing only one? #235709?

      If the lever was flipped upside down (or some form of the lever) if mounted on the r/s of the trans so it moved the shaft from the opposite direction--wouldn't it achieve the right result?
      Years ago I stopped in Buffalo to see my brother while I was visiting from Kansas City. Marc had replaced the transmission in his '65 Mustang 6 cyl-3-speed. He couldn't figure out why the replacement had 2nd and 3rd backwards in the pattern. He'd flipped the 2nd-3rd shifter lever when transferring parts from the broken trans. -- Dave
